1898 German Deep Sea Expedition. Wrapper 13.10.1898 with 10pf franking and ship's postmark of SMS Habicht No. 9. Addressed to expedition participant Dr. Apstein after the research vessel VALDIVIA had already left the port of 'Victoria' (Cameroon) on 25.9.1898. Redirected via the court post office 'Berlin' and via 'Hamburg' to PADANG (Sumatra) with the rare one liners 'faire suivre' and 'care of German consulate' and the transit cancels 'Batavia' and 'Weltevreden'. In Padang very probably delivered to Dr. Apstein. The VALDIVIA at this time penetrated farthest south into Antarctic waters, rediscovered 'Bouvet Island' and docked at Padang coming from Antarctica on 22.1.1899. Über das Hofpostamt 'Berlin' via 'Hamburg' umgeleitet nach PADANG (Sumatra) mit den seltenen Zeilenstempeln 'faire suivre' und 'care of German consulate' und den Transitstempeln 'Batavia' und 'Weltevreden' und in Padang sehr wahrscheinlich an Dr. Apstein ausgeliefert. Die VALDIVIA drang zu diesem Zeitpunkt am weitesten in antarktische Gewässer nach Süden vor, entdeckte 'Bouvet Island' erneut und legte von der Antarktis kommend am 22.1.1899 in Padang an. Content: Lindenberg of Woltereck & Robinson, Hamburg, made an offer of wooden ships for use in the 1st German South Pole Expedition (which was then carried out from 1901). A very early letter. The offer was not accepted - instead, the construction of the polar ship GAUSS was then commissioned. UNIQUE. ÷ 1898. Erste Deutsche Südpol-Expedition 1901/03. Brief geschrieben von Geheimrath Neumayer (Deutsche Seewarte, Hamburg) als Aktenvermerk für die Kommission für Südpolarforschung. Inhalt: Lindenberg von der Fa. Woltereck & Robinson, Hamburg, machte ein Angebot über Holzschiffe zum Einsatz für die 1. deutsche Südpolarexpedition (die dann ab 1901 durchgeführt wurde). Ein sehr frühes Schreiben. Such seal stamps were mainly used after the expedition to seal the elaborate correspondence when processing the expedition results. Very rare! ÷ 1901.
