AUSTRALIA: 1911 Post Office Design Competition Cockatoo/Boomerang/Platypus within Lyrebird Feathers essay by ET Luke, stamp-size undenominated proofs printed in blue, yellow-orange (closed tear at lower-left), violet & green ACSC #E112A-D, and with 'ONE PENNY' Added in rose-carmine #E112F (with 'HO' part-papermaker's watermark), the first on stout paper, the others on thin paper, Cat $7500. Ex Derrick Ray. Separate RPSofL Certificates (2004) each state "genuine, so far as we can say", which is an example of why Australian material should be expertised in Australia. [The ACSC states "All are very rare, with generally only one example recorded in any one colour". Neither the ACSC nor the relevant certificate mention the tear on the yellow-orange proof]

AUSTRALIA: 'PARAPARAP/9OC18/NORTHERN TERRITORY' (the later of only two recorded examples) light but obvious strike slightly overstruck with similarly under-inked 'UNCLAIMED/PARAPARAP NT' h/s (the only example we have noted). Rated RRRRR. PO 4/7/1918; renamed Parap (1) 12/10/1918. One of the shortest-lived permanent post offices anywhere in Australia. [Named for the call of the black cockatoo. The name was ostensibly changed because there was a small community of the same name in Victoria but, by that reasoning, literally hundreds of Australian placenames would have required amendment. [The other recorded example of the cds, on KGV 1d, sold at the Prestige auction of 8.5.2013 for $333]

This is the first time in almost 40 years that we have offered this error, one of the most dramatic of all Australian "Missing Colours". Possibly unique! [The ACSC records two variants of this error 1) with Grey Printing also Partly Omitted from the first & fifth units; and 2) as here. However, it is stated that this error was known only from a block of 10 (2x5) that was stupidly reduced to a block of 4 of the 3rd & 4th rows and then to two pairs. The implication is that the strip offered here is the only surviving example of the "full" error. Tom Pierron also states that "just two mint copies, both in vertical pairs with partials, survive"]
