Lang, London, England bearing New York, N.Y., 5¢ black on bluish (9X1a), Position 16, ample to large margins, tied by red "New-York '5 Paid' Nov 29" foreign-mail integral-rate cds, carried as endorsed by Cunard Britannia from Boston Dec. 2nd to Liverpool arriving Dec. 17th, red London (12.17) arrival backstamp and manuscript "1/-" due rating; stamp with minor wrinkle at left center, Very Fine and scarce, ex-Lapham, Frelinghuysen.

As usual for this correspondence, this cover was sent to James Lang in England and forwarded to Trieste outside the mails.

(Freight Money) 1847 (Feb. 23) New Orleans, La. to Dresden, Saxony, Redirected to Göttingen, Hannover. Folded letter with "New Orleans La. Feb 23" cds with "Paid" h.s. and manuscript "25" prepaid rating for freight money fee and blue manuscript "10" for inland postage, carried by Black Star Line Nicholas Biddle from New York Mar. 5th to Liverpool arriving Mar. 26th, "Liverpool Ship/26MR1847" backstamp with manuscript "1/6" debit to Prussia, forwarded to Hannover, various German debits with final "22¼" ggr. due rating, Very Fine, One of only three recorded freight money covers to Germany..
Estimate; $300 - 400.

Letter prepaid 25¢ steamship freight money fee plus 10¢ inland fee to New York in anticipation of going on board the new steamship Sarah Sands, marked in blue ink, upper right. Letter arrived in New York after steamer left so New York postmaster placed it on sailing ship to Liverpool and refunded unused portion of freight money fee. London marked 1/6d debit to Prussia and sent letter on steamer to Hamburg. Prussians marked 16-2/3 sgr. for 1846 Anglo-Prussian Convention fees owed them (15 sgr. to U.K. and 1-2/3 sgr. for Hamburg transit). Prussia added 5 sgr. transit fee and debited Saxony 21-2/3 sgr. (not shown), which Leipzig converted to 218 npf. Postage due at Dresden was 234 npf with 16 npf added for Saxony transit. Letter redirect to Hannover and marked for 22¼ ggr. postage due.

Cover front bearing 5¢ red brown (1), rich color with mostly large margins except clear at bottom, tied by blue circular 13-bar grid cancel, matching blue "Brattleboro Ct., Sep 28" cds, carried by Cunard Line Britania from Boston Oct. 1st to Liverpool arriving Oct. 16th, London manuscript "1/6" debit rating, Hannover black "England/über Bremen" two-line handstamp and red crayon "12" ggr restatement (1s6d) also ties stamp, manuscript "14gg 2d" rating at top right; 5¢ with vertical crease, a Very Fine use, with 2012 P.F. certificate.

THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF THE 1847 ISSUE TO GERMANY.

The first U.S. steamship sailed in June 1847. During the retaliatory time period, the British charged sea postage on prepaid mail carried by U.S. ships. So to avoid the double payment, the sender specified "Engl. Steamer". The total postage paid by the sender and addressee was 45¢.

Blue folded cover with brilliant red "Pittsburgh Pa., Feb 1" cds and matching "Paid" and "10" rating handstamps, carried by Union Line Gallia from New York Feb. 8th to Le Havre arriving Mar. 5th, Ligne L'Havre (3.5) arrival backstamp, blue Essingen (3.9) arrival backstamp, red ms. "18/4" totaled to 22 kr due in red crayon, Very Fine and attractive with all markings in red.

The steam packet "Franklin" also left New York on Feb. 8th, but the sender directed the letter to go via New York and Le Havre without paying the 24¢ ship letter fee. So, it was sent by sailing vessel without charge. The French transit was 6 decimes, or 18 kr, plus Thurn & Taxis 4 kr transit for total due of 22 kr.
