Byrd Transatlantic Flight 1927: Very small envelope signed by Byrd, endorsed “Via the Airplane/”America” and addressed to London, with New York June 21 and Ver-sur-Mer July 2 c.d.s’s, resealed by Postes et Telegraphes official tape, the original adhesive washed off, and with American Embassy receiving handstamp. Also 1930 Exhibit Supply Co., Chicago advertising card showing the “America” (incorrectly cited as the plane used by Byrd for the North Pole flight). Competing for the Orteig prize for the first Trans-Atlantic flight, subsequently won by Charles Lindbergh, but delayed by a succession of problems, the “America” ditched in the sea off Caen on July 1. The mail, the first official U.S. Post Office consignment by air across the Atlantic, was duly salvaged but the mailbag had become soaked. Photo. (Image1)
