1856-1876: Group of 17 different East India stamps mint, with 1856-60 ½a. and 2a. yellow-buff, 1860 8p. on bluish paper, and 1865-76 watermarked stamps including 2a. orange, 1866 4a. and 6a8p., 1874 1r., and others. Most of them with large part original gum, few stamps with imperfections as short perfs or stained but nevertheless a good group. (SG about £2400)

1872 Double-weight cover sent from the French Consular Agency in Tellicherry (blue h/s on back) to Torquay, Great Britain "VIA BOMBAY & BRINDISI" (blue h/s), franked 1868 8a. pale carmine pair (= 1r. rate for covers ½-1 ounce) tied by "TELLICHERRY/JY 15/1872"-"90" duplex, and on the reverse with Calicut and Bombay transit datestamps as well as Torquay '12 Aug 72' arrival c.d.s. Cover's back reduced at top, and cover opened three sides for presentation, but still an attractive and scarce item.

Each page with a golden ornamentic frame, and signed "Your Sincere and faithful friend Martanda Vurmah, Rajah", the cover with Maharajah's embossed seal and a red wax seal. AN IMPORTANT MAHARAJAH COVER TO THE COVERNOR OF MADRAS (and the Cape Colony; formerly Governor of Hong Kong).
