1841 entire to "Mrs Rex/Bath" with letter headed "Belvidere - Knysna/October 1 1841" signed "TH Duthie" endorsed "Inland Postage paid at Knysna 1/3d", carried overland by the Eastern Postal Route to Cape Town where red "1/3" receipt mark applied at U/R, fine strike of 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/OC7/1841/CAPE OF GOOD HOPE' crowned oval d/s on face, rated "8[d]" in black for the ship letter rate and boxed 'INDIA LETTE[R]/DEAL' h/s alongside, London transit and faint Bath arrival b/s, minor blemishes and light file folds. George Rex acquired a substantial land-holding around the Knysna River estuary on the Indian Ocean, some 500km east of Cape Town. Thomas Henry Duthie married George's daughter Caroline in 1833 and built the 'Belvidere' homestead. After George's death in 1839, Duthie purchased further lands from the estate. This letter to his "aunt" (George's sister) mentions "painful statements" regarding "the executors" suggesting some family tensions over these transactions. The rate paid does not accord specifically to those listed by Brian Trotter: the nearest towns with published inland rates to Cape Town were George/Swartrivier (9d) and Plettenberg's Bay (11d), both of which had postal routes to Knysna from 1810 onwards. It seems most likely that the letter was carried via the former, with an additional 6d payable for carriage there from Knysna. Putzel lists George Rex as the "Gratuitous Agent" at Knysna in 1834. After his death, the postal agency was named 'Duthie', and renamed 'Belvidere' PO in February 1844, presumably both under Duthie's control. A 'Knysna' (Melville) Post Office opened with John Rex (son of George) as Postmaster in January 1845. The exact status of the postal facilities at Knysna at the time this item was mailed remain unclear.

[Post Paid] and "p (first vessel)" on face with fair strike of 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/[crown]/CAPE TOWN' undated oval (Jurgens Type 17) overstriking boxed 'PREPAID' h/s, charged "4[d]" in red crayon for Cape Town port fee and a further "6[d]" in black ink for the inwards ship letter rate on arrival, fair Adelaide 'G.P.O./OC 2/1851/SOUTH AUSTRALIA' arrival cds in blue, a few aging marks at edges. [Apparently the "Rajah Sarawak" was no longer available to carry the item, and the writer had to resort to the first available ship] Brian Trotter (p162) states that "No definitive information prior to 1859 has been located regarding mail from the Cape Colony to the Indian Ocean territories, the Far East and Australasia, or Mediterranean destinations sent directly rather than via Britain"; he goes on to state that "several covers sent to Australia at the 4d Ship Letter rate in the 1855 to 1959 period exist", but does not mention any earlier correspondence.
