China, 1861, rare single-franking use of the U.S. 90¢ 1861 Issue, paying the double rate to China (Scott 72), via Southampton; the stamp, beautifully centered with deep shade, tied by two strikes of Philadelphia 12-bar grid-in-circle cancel on buff cover addressed to John M. Nixon, Jr., care of Blain, Tate & Co. in Shanghai, China; red Philadelphia "Paid" Foreign Mail office c.d.s. very faintly struck (as often for this office in this period), with magenta "48/2" double 24¢ credit to Great Britain at top center; the cover was carried on the Inman Line's Glasgow from New York on May 9, 1863, arriving in Queenstown on May 22 and Liverpool the next day; red "London Paid BB MY 23 63" transit, red "1d" handstamp crossed out in red crayon and re-rated with manuscript "2" for double 1d British Colonial rate; then carried on Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. steamers from Southampton to Alexandria (Egypt), overland to Suez, thence to Hong Kong via Galle (Ceylon); "Hong-Kong C JY 19 63" receiver on back, with the final leg to Shanghai made on another P&O steamer; stamp with small sealed tear at top, Very Fine, ex-Knapp, Grunin, Gross. #13 in Herzog & Starnes' cover census, signed in pencil by Stanley Ashbrook (Oct. 25, 1951), with 2018 P.F. certificate,

China, 1911-13, quartet of covers sent from Amoy to the US, an interesting group, all addressed to a Miss Sue M. Fair; three on "American Consular Service/Amoy, China." corner card envelopes, one on larger envelope with striking "American Consulate,/Amoy, China" red wax seal on reverse; the earliest, franked by 10s Japan Offices in China (#13) tied by "Amoy/I.J.P.O." comb dated 15.12.11, with Moji and Yokohama transits; the other three covers date from early 1913, two franked by Statistical Department "Republic" overprints tied by Kulangsu [Gulangyu, a small island just outside Amoy/Xiamen], one with Amoy and partial, smudged Shanghai Chinese daters plus a Shanghai I.J.P.O. handstamp, the other with Amoy Chinese and I.J.P.O. daters; the fourth cover, dated Feb. 18, 1913, franked by 10c Revolution Commemoration issue with Chinese Kulangsu and Amoy daters and an Amoy I.J.P.O. handstamp as well; various faults and age/travel-related toning and ink, but sound on the whole, Fine to Very Fine, a neat little group for the postal historian or cancel collector. China, 1912-48, compendium of Chinese covers, by our count 58 in total, with the majority of items running from the mid-'30s to the final years of the Republic; myriad frankings present, from Waterlow "Republic" overprints to Junks, Sun Yat-sens and Martyrs (both basic and CNC issues), Airmails and commemoratives; most to Oberlin College from their missions and schools; usages include Censored, Air, Express and Registered (some a combination thereof), with items of note including a 1937 cover franked with Japan 20s Mt. Fuji & Deer cancelled Dairen, an Oct. 31, 1936 cover bearing one-day commemorative cancel for Chiang Kai-shek's 50th Birthday, two lovely stamp collage postal cards (unused), a domestic 1942 cover with Japanese Officially Sealed label across the top, a 1943 cover to the US sent "over the hump" via BOAC and Pan-Am, a 1929 First Flight Cover franked with #C6-C10 (each with imprint, most with partial plate number), etc.; condition varies, but generally fresh and sound, Fine to Very Fine with much better, well worth inspecting.
