1903 (July 24), Cover from California to London, England, forwarded to Germany, and returned, a well-traveled item addressed to a Marco Newmark, batted about like a polo ball; 2¢ red entire (#U385) uprated by 1902 Series 1¢ (#300, 3) and 5¢ (304), and sent from Avalon, CA, on July 24, 1903; at London the address crossed out and forwarded to Stuttgart and thence to Berlin (or vice-versa; no German postmarks are present); bilingual German/French "Moved/No Forwarding Address" label on front, with multiple Washington, DC, Los Angeles and Santa Monica postmarks front and back tracing the letter's return trip; pointing hand Dead Letter Office handstamp ("Dead Letter Office/Received in Bad Condition/Oct 18 1903/Foreign Branch") on front with postmark on reverse, the damaged cover also receiving a US Post Office Official Seal (#OX11) at left; to top it all off: the sender had moved to Los Angeles in the meantime; in remarkable condition for all its travels, Fine to Very Fine, an uncommon, and fun, addition to any postal history collection. [Connecticut] LYME CT./JULY 1(4), well struck red rimless c.d.s. with manuscript "4" (inverted in the date) and "10" rate on an 1831 folded letter to Berlin, Ct., Very Fine,

The letter is from a woman to her mother in which she mentions that "Mr. Wait", the Lyme Postmaster told her that her letter would be a day late because the mail from Lyme arrives in New Haven after the stage for Berlin has departed. (Image)

The letter, to a Capt. Noah Scovell, tells of the writer's unsuccessful attempts to hire "salors" for Scovell's schooner as "Saylors dont love to go 20 miles from home to make a voyage by land." He suggests that if Scovell sailed his schooner to New London, he'd have no trouble finding crewmen at "10-12 or 13 dolls. per month"

[Connecticut] WINDSOR CT(.), Very Fine strike (period not struck up) of the 24mm straightline with manuscript "Dec 10" as a forwarding postmark on a neat 1842 folded letter from Middletown, Ct. to Windsor and forwarded to Poquonock, Ct.; originally postmarked with a bold red Dec 9 Middletown c.d.s.; manuscript rates are "6" then "forwd. 6" totaled to "12", Very Fine,

The letter is a bill to the Select Men of Windsor for the boarding of one Sally Day, wife of Franklin Day "at 6/- pr week, 7 weeks & 4 days $14.57". The Selectmen then forwarded the bill to an attorney in Poquonock.
