One hundred two warships (Timberclad, Ironclad, Tinclad, River Monitors, Rams and Gunboats) served in the Mississippi River Flotilla. Most of the vessels had complements of less than 100 and served less than two years.

Fort Wright was a strongpoint protecting the approach to Memphis. It also served as a training facility for building fortifications and installion of batteries for protection from Naval combatants. It was abandoned in 1862 but reoccupied sporadically.
