1990-93 Birds of Paradise set of 17 corner stamps + Hong Kong strip of 4, 45t with 'MAY 1992' Imprint - stated to be "the rarest of all printings in the series" - ** VFU & on commercial cover, Thin '21t' on 45t SG 755 two blocks of 4 each with Full Overprint Offset on Reverse (one with Ceremuga Certificate), and Thick '21t' on 45t & 90t SG 755b & 756b corner stamps; also Tourism '65t' on '60t' with '65t' Omitted in setenant block of 12, and 'Stamp/Duty/1d.' on 6½d complete sheet of 36 with Imprint; unmounted. [We would encourage Gibbons to fully list the various dated printings of the Birds of Paradise, just as they have done for the Fiji Architecture & Falklands Ships series] (Qty 50 + sheet) (Image1)

POSTAL HISTORY: Family correspondence commencing in 1937 to "Ewald Uechtritz/St Ignatius College/ Riverview/Sydney" with NG Coronation 2d & 3d tied by 'KOKOPO' cds & superb R h/s; 1954 double-weight air cover & 1959 1/7d Registration Envelope uprated also to Uechtritz in Germany from his brother Alfred at Sum Sum Plantation out of Rabaul; 1960 OHMS cover with PNG Customs cachet on the back registered to Alfred in Queensland; six later covers to Alfred at Lae, one with 2c & 5c Coils, one underpaid from Australia with PNG 1c x2 & 7c x2 in lieu of Postage Dues; 1969 registered to Indonesia with Masks 5c+5c pair (20c total) & 1976 to Australia unclaimed & returned both from Alfred; plus three unrelated items. Ewald Uechtritz was born in New Guinea of a German father & Danish/Samoan mother. After graduating as Head Prefect in 1938, he was sent by his father for an extended holiday to Germany. When WWII broke-out, Ewald was conscripted into the German Navy, where he served in U-Boats. After the war, the British refused his request to return to Australia.
