Dunedin 1865-75 "5-line" A-type datestamps (mostly duplex type) of general type in use 1862-82. Range of 9 covers, (8 with FFQ stamps, 1 with FSF 1d pair). Appear to be all diff types. Other cancels noted include Tokomairiro, Queenstown & Nelson. Also 2 covers to Christchurch 1873 franked FFQ 2d vermilion, both canc fine HOKITIKA / C21 5-line A-type duplex d/s. White's Point (NN 1882-Jan 1898, March 1898-1899; moved to Newton Flat), clear fairly complete "WHITE'S PNT" 20½mm diameter A-type cds 28 AP 99 on 1898 1d (back thin). of the name, "-ITE'S PNT" is clear but "WH" has been added in m/s ink. Rare (very few examples recorded. Latest date known of this d/s (no proof date is known) Gold mining. Note: an earlier A-type, 21½mm diameter, with "WHITE'S POINT" in full, is known used 1892-1896 (scan of an example with this lot). Newton Flat A-type cds was proofed 1 SP 99. (Image)

A study of "number in bars" obliterators 1 to 18 (as supplied by Perkins Bacon & Co in 1855). Total 35 stamps (incl 22 FFQs) & 5 covers (all FFQ) on 10 pgs. Stamps noted incl FFQ 1/- SG 3 (repaired), SG 6 x 2, SG 16 (rebacked), SG 44, 2d SG 5, SG 9 on cover, 1d SG 4, SG 97. One cover (to GB) has a 3 colour franking with imperf 1d (oxidised), 2d & 6d black-brown, canc clear "8" obliterator & b/s fine New Plymouth cds 8 OCT 1862. Some items misidentified. High CV. 1844-5 entire GB to NZ, with fine unframed (red) cds "PAID SHIP LETTER / LONDON" (with crown) 7 OC 1844, m/s red "8" (8d paid) & black "4" (4d to pay). On receipt, fine almost complete crown within oval d/s (rare) "NELSON / NEW ZEALAND" JA * 27 / 1845 & good similar Wellington d/s FE 17 1845 (21 days from Nelson!) Addressed to "Col. W. Wakefield, Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company, Wellington, New Zealand". This Nelson d/s used only 1844-7 & good examples are rare on cover. Well written up on page. (Image)

1849-50 entire GB to Nelson, NZ, with m/s "Via private ship", Fermoy cds (blue) AU 8, unframed "SHIP LETTER / LONDON" cds (with crown, red) AU 10, "PAID" cds x 2 (red), red m/s "8" (8d paid), black h/s "1" (1d to pay). On receipt, unframed Wellington cds FE 9 1850 & similar Nelson cds FE 24 1850. All cds fine. Very long transit (198 days). Addressed to Thomas J Thompson (early surveyor, arrived in Nelson 1843). Noted obliterators "5 OTAHUHU A", "ONEHUNGA A", "QUEENS REDOUBT" x 5 (incl faint strikes on strip of 3 2d NZ wmk p12½ with cert), "HEADQUARTERS" x 10, "COROMANDEL" x 5, Drury cds x 4 & nice Otahuhu cds on 1869 cover. Also 15 "PROVINCE OF AUCKLAND" cds on 16 stamps, mostly part strikes (number visible on 12). Scarce lot. (Image)

1860 cover GB to Auckland, NZ, franked QV 6d (perfs trimmed off at base), canc Whitehaven duplex d/s AU 15 60, red London b/s AU 16 60. Endorsed "To be left at Post Office until called for". Part Auckland receipt d/s OC 25 1860. Readdressed to Mongonui. Further endorsed "Not Known at Mongonui H.G." Light strike ("MONGONUI" legible) of very rare crown within oval d/s "MONGONUI / NEW ZEALAND" AP 25 (year 1861 illegible). On back, m/s "Kiataia Ap 29? / 61" (for Kaitaia), one of just 2 examples recorded. Further m/s on front "Not Known at Kiataia. R.J.A." Only 5 examples of the oval Mongonui d/s are recorded (1859-64) by McNaught (see RPSNZ Vol VII, pg 121). Two rare Northland postal markings on the same cover! Some light edge wear. 1864-5 Land Wards oval "HEADQUARTERS" in bars obliterator (used at Tauranga camp), fine complete strike on rejoined horiz pair FFQ 2d blue imperf (4, 3 margins) & 2 good-fine part strikes ("HEADQU-" & -DQUARTERS") on similar p12½ pair. Name excised by 1866. Both pairs with NZ wmk. Stamps SG 98, 107, alone cat £700. Scarce. Difficult pmk to find so good. (Image)

1867 Envelope to London with 6d red-brown (SG 122) & 4d yellow (SG 120) tied by Dunedin 21 NOV 1867 duplexes inscribed via Suez & Marseilles. London MR 23 1868 receiving cancel in red. Flap & front torn. Generally untidy. (Image)

1870 Cover to "Rev. E.H. Heywood, Remuera, nr. Auckland", "MANGAWAI" (undated) m/s along left edge. Large m/s "2" beside FFQ 2d blue, p12½ (applied subsequently?), canc "1" obliterator & b/s Auckland cds JU 17 70 (just after the move of the original Mangawai PO to Hakaru in March 1870). No m/s pmk has previously been recorded from the first Mangawai PO (1860-70). Mangawai did not receive a date stamp until Oct 1882 (this was for the 2nd, relocated office). This cover was probably carried by ship to Auckland & the stamp was cancelled on arrival there. An added notation refers to a death certificate (the original contents?) Also 3 other FFQ covers 1869-70 ex Wellington, to the same addressee, franked a) 1d & 2d; b) 6d; c) strip of 3 x 1d (all with added notations re insurance policies). (Image)

Alongside is fine "NAPIER / HI" duplex d/s OC 15 70. B/s very fine "WAIPAWA / N.Z." cds (same day). Proving cover for this scarce obliterator. Cds (also scarce) known 1864-74. Fine. (Image)
