1845-O Liberty Re-Punched Date PCGS AU50. This is the re-punched date variety with an extra 4 and 5 showing clearly under the main digits of the date. In their text on gold coins, authors Garrett & Guth describe the 1845-O eagle as " . . . . very rare in AU condition, with Mint State examples exceedingly rare." (Of 168 total 1845-O Eagles graded by PCGS, only 6 are in mint state.) The PCGS website shows the value of the re-punched date variety at $4,250; Greysheet AU50 bid is $4,000). Interestingly, the last auction record for one in AU50 is from Feb 2018 where one sold for an astonishing $5,760, making our estimates for the lot appear quite conservative. Whatever the true value, this lot represents an offering that is not likely to be repeated any time in the near future. If your tastes are in rare gold coins, here's an opportunity. (Note: This was lot 160 in DCA Sale #16 held in April 2021. The coin hammered then for $3,400.) (Image)

1868 NGC AU53. All eagles of the 1860s are scarce - uncirculated examples are rare. This issue boasts a mintage of only (10,630) and they are seldom offered for sale. Similar to the previous lot, this is another great chance to acquire a very scarce gold coin. (Image)
1857 Liberty F+ attractive for the grade. The wear indicates that small gold saw quite a bit of use in commerce in the 1850s. A scarce issue AU and above. Authors Garrett & Guth recommend that if you want to purchase a circulated Liberty Quarter Eagle, look for an older one with some numismatic premium such as the one offered here. (Image)

Cat No:1857S
1857-S Liberty PCGS XF45. Nice original and a great example of the Type 1 style. Circulated examples of this date are likely to be overshadowed by the many thousands of uncirculated pieces that were recovered from the wreck of the SS Central America. The story of that wreck, the huge loss of gold bullion that resulted, and the impact the incident had on the economy for years thereafter is fascinating reading. (Image)

Cat No:1871S
1871-S Liberty NGC XF40. As with all of the other S-Mint Half Eagles of the 1860s and 1870s, they are seldom offered for sale - in any grade. And when they are offered they are usually well worn as gold from San Francisco circulated extensively. 1871-S is virtually unknown in mint state, and nice circulated pieces appear under-priced at current levels. This lot creates an opportunity to acquire a truly scarce coin. PCGS shows only 108 submissions of this date (in all grades) and surely many of these were RE-submissions. (Image)
