Datelined folded letter with green Liverpool (6.17) cds with black "1/-" due handstamp, green oval "L/JU17/B" backstamp, carried on Cunard Line Africa from Liverpool Jun. 18th to New York arriving Jun.30th, Montreal "1s.4d. Cy." circled handstamp for 1s4d due in Canadian currency equivalent to 1s4d sterling, Extremely Fine, a superb example of unpaid mail to Canada through the U.S. ex-Arthur White.

1853 (Aug. 19) Riedbach, Bavaria to Snufftown, N.J. Gray folded letter with blue "Riedbach, 19/8 53" double-circle datestamp, reverse with Frankfurt (8.20) cds, "Bremen, F. Th-Tax O.P.A., 24 Aug. 1853" half-moon and "S.T.P.A., Bremen (8.24) cds, red crayon "9" and large "7" grote debit handstamp to U.S., carried by Fritze Line Hansa from Bremerhaven Aug. 30th to New York arriving Sep. 20th, bold strike of "New-York Ship '27 cts.' Sep 20" integral debit cds, F.-V.F., Carried on the Maiden Voyage of the Fritze Line Hansa.
Estimate; $400 - 600.

Thurn & Taxis Post carried letter from Frankfurt to Bremen debited Bremen "9" kreuzer for the transit fee. Bremen struck the stylized "7" handstamp to show debit in Bremen currency (grote) to the U.S. Postage due included 20¢ American sea postage and 7¢ German transit postage. Two different sizes of this uncommon Bremen "7" due marking exist.

Hansa made only five round voyages between Bremerhaven and New York carrying mails for this very short-lived Bremen steamship company attempting to compete with the American Ocean Line.

1858 (Apr. 22) Hong Kong, China to New York, N.Y. Datelined folded letter endorsed "Via Marseilles", partial Hong Kong (4.22) double-arc backstamp, carried by P&O steamers from Hong Kong via Marseilles, red London (6.12) backstamp and manuscript "24" cent debit to U.S., carried transatlantic by Vanderbilt Line Ariel from Southampton Jun. 16th to New York arriving Jun. 29th, sharp strike of "New - York Am. Pkt. Jun 30" cds and "45" cent due handstamp for ¼ - ½ ounce letter via Marseilles (effective Jan. 1857 to Aug 1861), a Very Fine use at the 45¢ rate.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

Very interesting letter from Augustine Heard & Co. concerning ship wreck and Second Opium War: "…About 4,000 Packages have been recovered from the wreck of the "Cruiser" and are held by the sailors until some settlement until some settlements are made with the local underwriters of the ship. Some 2000 packages more, report says were carried off by the local Chinese to Whampoa and sold there….The "Grey Feather" has come down the river from Whampoa to complete he loading here, probably with Chow-Chow Cargo…The Chinese traders at Canton, anticipating some hostile proceedings towards foreigners upon the arrival of the new Governor General, who is expected from the north about the 10th, are very anxious to move off what stocks of Teas and other export produce they have remaining on their hands… All the foreign Ambassadors have left Shanghae for the north; and should the Allied Powers carry into effect their reported intentions of stopping the supplies for Pekin serious apprehensions are entertained that the Chinese will take some retaliatory measures at the Treaty Ports…".

Parana Via Southampton", reverse with two partial strikes of blue "Rio de Janeiro, JU 9" origin double-arc and red "London, JY 6, 63" transit backstamp, black "24/Cents" rocking debit handstamp to U.S., carried by Inman Line City of London from Liverpool Jul. 8th to New York arriving Jul. 19th, black "New-York Am. Pkt. Jul 19" exchange cds with matching "45" and sharp "U.S. Notes / 53" depreciated currency handstamp, Very Fine and early depreciate currency cover, ex-Hahn.
Estimate; $400 - 600.

This was rated at the 45¢ rate in coin, or 53¢ due in depreciated greenback currency with a 1.18 inflation. The "Parana" was a 2,250 ton ship that made 3 Galway trips on charter, became a hulk in 1868.
