COPPIN'S BALLOON - AEROSTATIC MEDAL: in white medal, 38mm diameter, verso inscribed 'CREMORNE GARDENS/VICTORIA 1858', pierced at top. Rare.
George Coppin was an English-born comic actor, entrepreneur & politician, who resided in Australia for much of his life. In c.1855 he purchased the Theatre Royal and the Cremorne Pleasure Gardens, Richmond, from whence the balloon flights departed.
The medal was sold to attendees to the launch of the four Melbourne flights of the 'Australasian' balloon which departed between February and April 1858. The second flight (Feb.15) resulted in a mini-riot when the balloon landed between the Collingwood Stockade and Brunswick, where Coppin and the balloon were brutally attacked by the local populace.
Another example, then stated to be one of possibly four known, sold at a 2008 Noble's Auction for $1,800.
