America / L (P.2) / Slavery. 1841 (Mar 1) Entire letter from Great Falls, New Hampshire, to England, with red "PAID" and "GREAT FALLS / NH" c.d.s, black "1/-" charge mark and oval "AMERICA / L", the enclosed letter written on anti-slavery notepaper depicting a pleading slave in chains. The outer sheet with a little soiling and reinforcing of folds, the enclosed anti-slavery notepaper fine and scarce.

Dated "America" (P.3). 1850 Entire to France and 1855 entire letter to Edinburgh both from New York, with the oval dated "AMERICA" in black (FE 17 1850) or green (JY 15 1855), the first also with an inspector's star alongside, the second with a "1/-" charge mark and "5 / N. York Br. Pkt" c.d.s. The 1850 entire with some white bleaching, otherwise fine, carried on the Cunard Niagara or Asia. A very scarce Packet datestamp, especially in green, recorded 1850-57 but rarely used. (2).

Pkt. Letter Tombstone Datestamps (P.9/10). 1857 Cover to England franked G.B 6d cancelled upon arrival by "466" numeral, backstamped black "PKT. LETTER / LIVERPOOL" datestamp (P.9), similar type "PKT LETTER / PAID / LIVERPOOL" datestamp (P.10) in red then applied on the front. Opened out to display both handstamps, minor creasing and upper fold reinforced with hinges, a very unusual cover probably paid at the 6d Officers rate.

Carried on the branch packet "La Plata" from Montevideo to Bahia and then on the third of just four voyages made by the company from Buenos Ayres to Liverpool, on the "Imperador" from Bahia. Above Oz (M.13). 1852 (Dec 1) Entire letter from Augusta to Belfast prepaid at the single rate of 24c, with circular undated "AUGUSTA / Ga", "PAID" and "24" all in blue, red "19" showing the credit to G.B. Found to be a double weight letter at Liverpool and handstamped "ABOVE ½Oz" but only charged the single rate deficiency of 1/-, backstamped "AMERICA / LIVERPOOL" c.d.s (P.5). The 1849 Anglo-US treaty stipulated that underpaid mail was to be treated as wholly unpaid and charged accordingly; however until the end of 1852 the New York and Liverpool Postmasters unofficially agreed to charge such letters with the deficiency only. A scarce item, one of just four underpaid transatlantic letters charged the single deficiency recorded by Colin Tabeart in an article in "Chronicle" (Feb 2000). Photo on Page 58. (Image1)
