1752-1841 Entire letters (12) and an entire, mainly from the West Indies including 1770 Greenock "SHIP" from St. Kitts, 1788 "PLYMOUTH / SHIP-LRE" from Grenada, 1768 letter from Antigua, 1771 letter from Jamaica with faint but very scarce "CAMBLETON / SHIP LRE", 1783 "PT. GLASGO / SHIP LRE" from Jamaica, etc., also 1752 privately carried letter from Martinique to Grenada, 1790 privately carried letter from Grenada to Scotland and two Packet letters, very mixed quality with some faults. 1825-66 Printed ephemera concerning shipping services to the continent, including 1828 and 1836 General Steam Navigation Co. notices advertising all services, 1831 illustrated notice for the "Lord Melville" and "Earl of Liverpool" Steam Packets to Calais, 1844 booklet with timetables and itineraries and 1866 illustrated receipt for one box carried on "The Bruiser", 1825 illustrated receipt for one case carried on "The Good Intent" from Southwark to the Isle of Wight, illustrated trade card for "The Prince Cobourg" Packet from Southampton to Havre, etc. (9).

Paquebots. 1899-1902 Covers and cards (8) bearing G.B 1d lilacs with Paquebot handstamps including Fremantle and Perth; 1905 cover bearing two G.B QV ½d postcard cut-outs with Port Said Paquebot; and 1910 front with Norway 10ore pair cancelled at Tyne Dock, handstamped "PAQUEBOT" and "SHIP LETTER / TYNE DOCK / SOUTH SHIELDS". Birmingham. 1910 Picture Postcard of R.M.S "Carpathia" with KEVII ½d pair each cancelled "BIRMINGHAM / SHIP" c.d.s (Oct 16), a New York Paquebot c.d.s (Oct 10) alongside, fine.

Birmingham. 1922 (Sep 19) Picture Postcard of R.M.S "Ordina" with KGV 1d cancelled "BIRMINGHAM / SHIP" c.d.s, a second fine strike alongside, the stamp over cancelled by a Birmingham c.d.s, violet ship cachet.

Queenstown. 1851 Small stampless cover to England "P. Jamaica" with "QUEENSTOWN / SHIP LETTER" (S.1) and a Queenstown datestamp both in blue, and black handstruck "8", a little light staining.

Whitehaven. C.1800 Brass mailbag tag, one side engraved "SHIP LETTERS / FOR LONDON", the other side engraved "WHITEHAVEN", hole at left for attaching to a mailbag, 60x19mm. A remarkable item to have survived, unique.

1806-50 Entire letters (5) and entires (3) from USA (3), Canada (2) or South America (3) with ship letter handstamps of Liverpool (5), Margate (2) or Penzance. Also a c.1810 entire letter from England to USA, privately carried, possibly by a naval vessel. (9).

Freight Money Letter. 1842 (Mar 30) Entire from Baltimore to London paid 37½c + 25c freight money fee, blue Baltimore c.d.s and "PAID", carried by the Swallowtail Line "Ontario", file folds, otherwise fine. Ex Winter.

1845-69 Stamped entire letters (2) and a cover from G.B to USA, comprising 1845 letter from Ireland to New York bearing 1841 1d reds (2, faults) and 2d strip of three (ND-NF, two stamps touched at sides) each cancelled "302" of Letterkenny, Liverpool Ship Letter and New York Ship datestamps; 1859 cover from Manchester with eight 1d reds on the front, four further 1d reds on reverse initially overlooked, cancelled in London and in manuscript, marked "Insufficiently Stamped" and "6", treated as unpaid with New York 48c c.d.s (cover faults); and 1869 letter from Liverpool with six 1d reds. 1846-60 Entire letters (3) and a cover to USA, comprising 1846 letter from Malaga to Boston with red boxed "Returned for / 1/- Postage" forwarded on the Cambria once the 1/- postage was paid; 1851 stampless letter from Liverpool sent on the "Africa" with "19 / CENTS" deleted by "466" numeral and replaced by "38 / CENTS"; 1857 letter from London to Boston sent on the "Arabia" with two U.S 3c stamps cancelled "PAID"; and 1860 stampless cover from Liverpool sent on the "Canadian" with "Portland Me. Am. Pkt 24" c.d.s. (4).

Forwarding Agents. 1866-71 Entires or covers including 1866-67 stampless entire to Italy and a cover posted in London with differing senders cachets of H. Starr & Co (inscribed "American - Europe Express" or "Pacific Mail Steam Ship Co & Panama Railroad Co") both with the same illustration of a transatlantic paddle wheeler; 1869 cover from Washington D.C franked 12c black, to the U.S Despatch Agent in London with red oval "UNITED STATES / B.F STEVENS / LONDON / DESPATCH AGENT", etc. (4).

Canada - Prince Edward Island. 1839-55 Prestamp and stampless entire letters and covers to G.B, including 1839 letter from Lot 67 to the Isle of Skye prepaid 2/9 (faults); letters prepaid 6d, 1/- (2) or 1/2, or unpaid charged 1/- or 1/2, the last a part letter from Capt. Bayfield at Lake Superior to Charles Lyell (the famous Geologist and author) enquiring about the new edition of his book "Principles of Geology". Postmarks include Prince Edward Island undated circle or datestamps (2), Prince Edward Island Paid undated circles (3) and Charlotte Town Paid datestamp. (7).

Canada - Galway Line. 1860 (Jan 21) Entire letter from Pernambuco, Brazil, to Harbor Grace, Newfoundland carried by Forwarding Agent to New York and forwarded on the Galway Line "Prince Albert", charged 4d (the port-to-port charge) at St. John's, handstamped red oval "FORWARDED BY / GEORGE MOKE & Co / NEW-YORK" and the rare circular "NEW YORK / AND / GALWAY LINE", backstamped at St. John's (Mar 6). Canada - Allan Line. 1867 Stampless cover from Montreal to London sorted on the "Moravian" where the distinctive small "1/-" charge mark was applied, a manuscript 7d charge deleted. A scarce postage due handstamp. Photo on Page 76. (Image1)

China/Hong Kong. 1855-56 Entire letters from Canton or Shanghai to the same address in New York, both with "HONG KONG" double arc backstamps and New York Am. Pkt datestamps, the first carried by Collins Line "Atlantic" charged 96c, the second charged 53c. Fine, an unusual origin to USA. (2).

China/Macao. 1857 Cover to Baltimore endorsed "overland via Marseille" with "HONG KONG" backstamp, New York Br. Pkt c.d.s, carried on the Cunard "Europa", charged 33c. Recipient's endorsement indicates the cover originated in Macao.

China. 1862 (July 1) Stampless entire letter from Shanghai to Boston prepaid 2/2 in cash, backstamped at Shanghai and Hong Kong, red "SHANGHAI / PAID" c.d.s on the front, datestamps of London and "Boston Am. Pkt 5" with red "16 / CENTS", carried on the Inman Line "City of New York". Photo on Page 76. (Image1)

Egypt. 1856-59 Stampless covers from Alexandria British P.O to New York, the first carried by Cunard "America" charged 53c, the second apparently carried by Cunard "Asia" but with an incorrect Am. Packet c.d.s, charged 39c. Also 1870 entire letter to New York bearing G.B 4d pair each cancelled "B01", and an uncancelled 2d, carried on the "Russia". An unusual origin to the USA. (3).

Germany. 1853 (June 21) Stampless entire from Saxony to New Orleans sent by Prussian Closed Mail, carried by the Collins Line "Atlantic", with blue Bleckede c.d.s, red circular undated "AACHEN" and boxed "Paid / 25cts", backstamped on the Berlin-Minden and Coeln-Verviers T.P.Os with semicircular "Americ. / Packet", charged a 2c carriers fee for delivery with blue "snow shovel" shaped "N.O.U.S CITY POST" datestamp and oval framed "CAR 2". A little stained at left, otherwise fine and unusual.

Gibraltar. 1843 (June 21) Entire letter to Boston addressed via Baring Brothers in London with "GIBRALTAR" arc handstamp, prepaid 1/- in London and redirected to USA, carried by Cunard "Caledonia" with red "SHIP / 6".

Hong Kong/Philippines. 1862 Stampless cover to USA with oval senders cachet of Manila (lightly struck but Manila just readable), prepaid 1/11 in cash with red "HONG KONG / PAID" c.d.s (Jan 13), datestamps of London and N. York Am. Pkt, backstamped in Hong Kong, carried on the Inman Line "City of Washington". Photo on Page 76. (Image1)

India. 1853-58 Entire letters (4) and a cover from Bombay or Calcutta to the USA, one with Philadelphia Br. Pkt c.d.s (severe faults), the others carried by Collins Line vessels with New York Am. Pkt datestamps and 39, 45 or 65 (2) charge marks. Also an 1851 cover from USA to London, redirected to Calcutta prepaid 1/-. An uncommon origin to USA, three with faults, three fine. (6).

India. 1859 (Mar 21) Cover with Woburn, Mass c.d.s to Calcutta, initially paid 5c and then 21c, strangely backstamped "BOSTON / BR PKT" c.d.s (Mar 23) and "BOSTON / AM PKT" c.d.s (Mar 25), London and Calcutta Steam Letter datestamps. Apparently intended to go on the British Packet "Arabia" but missing the sailing so despatched by the American Packet "City of Washington". Very unusual.

India. 1860 (Sep 8) Entire letter from Calcutta to New York franked 1856-64 ½a, 1a, 2a and 8a, sent by Cunard "Europa" with "N. York Br Pkt 5" c.d.s. An attractive four colour franking. Photo on Page 80. (Image1)
