Datelined folded letter with script "Le Consul de France / à Richmond (Virginia)" handstamp, carried out of the mails to Paris and then forwarded unpaid to the Kingdom of Sardinia, bold "Paris, 19 Aout 51" and "10" decimes due handstamp, reverse with "Richmond, Republique, Francaise" circular handstamp, Extremely Fine and early Consular letter to an unusual destination.

1850 (Jan. 6) Morrisville Pa. to Marseilles, France. Cover with datelined letter from the sister of the Surgeon Clymer on the U.S. Frigate St. Lawrence, manuscript "29 Paid" (5¢ overpayment) sent via British open mail care of the U.S. Consul in Marseilles, carried on Cunard Line Cambria departing Boston Jan. 9th to Liverpool arriving Jan. 22nd, red London (1.22) backstamp and matching "Colonies &c. Art 13" framed accountancy handstamp, sent by rail from Calais to Marseilles, where the French manuscript "30" decimes due, the American Consul forwarded the letter to the U.S. Consul in Naples, Very Fine and early letter to Italy by British Open Mail.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

France debited 30 decimes French to Italy for transit. This letter went from Marseilles to Nizza, then directly to Naples.

Transit, May 9" exchange backstamp (incorrect month slug) and matching "5" in circle credit handstamp to NGU, carried by Cunard Line Java from New York Jun. 9th to Queenstown Jun. 18th, red "Verviers. B., 20 6, Coeln, Franco" four-line transit and matching red "Wfco 2" credit handstamp, reverse with Trieste (6.22) oval backstamp, brownish Beirut (7.5.) arrival cds; stamp faults and top edge repairs affecting Newark cds, Fine appearance and scarce destination.

The Verviers to Cologne traveling post offices handstamp showed the letter was fully paid. The clerk also marked the letter "Wfco 2" to show that foreign postage, i.e. beyond Germany, or "weiterfranco" of 2 silbergroshen had also been paid.
