Lipona was located 10 miles from Tallahassee on the mail route to Micanopy and was the site of a 10,000 acre plantation of Prince Achille Murate, exiled son of the King of Naples and a nephew of Napoleon Boneparte. Murat became known as Col. Murat after his marriage to a daughter of Virginian Col. B. Willis. Lipona is an anagram of Naples.
