Russian Revolution and Civil War » North Russia. The Italian Expeditionary Corps in Murmansk: The extraordinary Valter Astolfi assembly comprising 47 items (also including some documents) presented on exhibition pages, commencing with an introductory section featuring the Italian presence in European Russia in WWI and connected with the origin of the Corps in Murmansk, including two stationery cards of the Commander of the Italian Mission in Russia in 1916 and Russian newspapers sent to the Chief of Staff in Rome, as well as POW mail of "Irredenti" who will make up the Corps; the collection follows illustrating the route of the Corps from Italy to Murmansk with mail from France, England (Italian cachets on items carried through the British military and civilian mails), early mail in Murmansk, usages on Russian stationery, rare official mail carried through the military P.O. in Bologna, mail carried personally to Rome by a repatriated prisoner and posted at the Ministry of War, very rare military stationery sent by an Italian doctor onboard the "H.M. Hospital Ship- Braemar Castle", most unusual mail form the Detachment in Alexandrovsk, various scarce incoming mails from Italy and other countries including one which was sent back to Italy with a handstamp of the Corps, one telegram to Italy and two very rare incoming telegrams to Murmansk, cover sent to a military unit in Italy and readdressed to Murmansk where it was into service, letter from the International Government Commission of Supplies operating in London for the Corps in Murmansk, the three covers recorded (all included in this collection) featuring the Murmansk-London Italian special courier for secret military correspondence showing the "Corpo Spedizione Italiano/Murmania Comando" or the "Corpo di Spedizione Russia Settentrionale/Comando" cachets in violet and sent to the "Italian Liaison Officer-War Office-London". In addition 25 items non mounted on pages, including rare mail form Italy addressed to the Corps (5), 18 mails from to offices prior to their departure for Russia, one telegram from Murmansk to Italy, the concert program played by Italians and organised by the Y.M.C.A. in the Navy Club of Murmansk on 4.12.18 (printed in four languages) and 15 letters from another officer before and after his departure for Russia. The best assembly ever formed on the Italian intervention in Murmansk, the viewing being highly recommended for this collection of great historical interest. (Image)
