China » The Boxer War » Via Japanese Post Office. 1900 (Nov 1st) Japan 3s stationery card datelined in Huang-Tsun to Parma, posted at Tientsin and additionally bearing 1900-06 3s, 8s, 10s, 15s and 20s, tied by "Tientsin/I.J.P.O." cds's, with Yokohama and Parma backstamps; sender's text reading: "We are in the middle of the boxers but for now I have seen few of them, yesterday we have arrested two here". Also an 11.11.1902 brochure printed to commemorate the opening of the Italian barracks in Huang-Tsun. The stationery with some soiling, but probably the only mail from the Italian forces in this locality. (Image)

1901 (July 20) Japan 4s stationery postcard from Yokohama, cancelled by "Ra Nave Elba" cds; the "Elba" was in Japan for one month only to return later on 10 August to Taku. A very rare usage as it was not tollerated, and nevertheless it was not taxed. (Image)

1901 (Aug 6) Japanese 4s stationery postcard from Peking to Italy, cancelled by "Peking/I.J.P.O." cds, with Yokohama transit and arrival cds alongside; the sender indicates in the missive that "now the work has decreased and I have been assigned to the Command of the Expeditionary Corps together with Colonel Salsa". This item demonstrates that in summer 1901the Command was located in Peking. (Image)

1901 (Nov 23) Postcard from Shanghai to Venice, bearing Japanese P.O. 4s tied by bluish black "Ra Nave Elba" cds; usual tone spots. The practice of using foreign stamps on Italian naval mail was not accepted, but it was tolerated in exceedingly few exceptional cases, and in this case it was surprisingly not taxed on receipt (we have not found any similar item in the Mizuhara collection).
