India 1866 Oct 17 cover from Madras to London endorsed "via Marseilles" franked with 8p purple and 6a purple provisional ovpt POSTAGE type 15, (SG 66), tied by "MADRAS INDIAN. PAID" type 9a and forwarding agents seal, and London delivery on reverse. A scarce and attractive franking especially in this pristine condition. This is a rare example of a letter sent during the time in 1866 when there was a shortage of 1,2 and 4a postage stamps in India so that 6a revenue stamps with their ends trimmed and overprinted POSTAGE in green were used for postage.
