1840 1d Mulready lettersheet, Forme 6 Stereo A230. A superb example sent from New Buckenham to London bearing an additional four margin 1d Black Pl.4 each beautifully cancelled by a crisp red MC, with a "New Buckenham/Penny Post" handstamp at lower right. Backstamped at Attleborough and London for JU.15-16.1840. A beautiful example of an uprated Mulready, rarely seen in this quality. 1998 RPS Cert.: Estimate £3500-£4000 (Image)

1840 1d Mulready Lettersheet (Forme 6, Stereo A238). Very fine used example sent from Mayfield to Skippers Hill cancelled solely and contrary to regulations by a black Mayfield/Penny Post handstamp with no other postal markings on reverse. The parent office to Mayfield where a Maltese cross would have been applied is Uckfield, however Skippers Hill lies between the two towns and the cover would have been delivered en route, bypassing the parent office. PARLIAMENTARY: 1840 1d 'Houses of Parliament' printed envelope on greyish laid paper, addressed to George Napier Edinburgh, cancelled by red Paid Crowned ds for 8 AP 1840, signed by William Mackenzie MP for Peeblesshire; cover with crease and tear at top (sensibly reinforced), otherwise a very collectable example of this scarce envelope, with original contents enclosed recommending Napier to the Sherriff-ship of Peebles. SG Spec. PE2a, £8000 The sender, William Mackenzie was Tory MP for Peeblesshire from 1837-47 and famously resigned from Peel's Government in 1846 over the repeal of the Corn Laws.
