VICTORIA RACING CLUB: 'PROGRAMME/SEASON 1882-83' with red leather covers with gilt titles & named to Sir Thomas Elder, endorsed on flyleaf "Presented to Sir Thomas Elder, by Frederick Standish, Chairman, Victoria Racing Club. Melbourne 21st July 1882", includes nominations for the major races including the Victoria Derby & Melbourne Cup; and previous winners of the major races, Very Fine condition.  Sir Thomas Elder made his fortune from financing copper mines at Moonta & Wallaroo. He was the 'Elder' in the famous pastoral company Elder Smith Godlsborough Mort & Younghusband, and was a renowned philanthropist in South Australia. Captain Frederick Standish was Victoria's Chief Commissioner of Police between 1858 & 1880, and has been credited with instigating a horse race called the Melbourne Cup.
