2nd OPIUM WAR - INGOING G.B. 6d-RATE COVER TO "BOMBAY MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT, CANTON"; 3 Sept. 1860 env. (some toning) from London with 6d Lilac tied by fine duplex addressed "via Southampton" to "Dr. Langley R.N., Bombay Medical Establishment, Canton, China" with v. fine red "1d" Accountancy Mark (1d due to HK) on the front and mainly fine HK backstamp (21 Oct.). This letter was sent as the 2nd Opium War was reaching its climax; it reached HK as the Convention of Peking was ongoing and just three days before the British ratified the Treaty of Tientsin. EARLY USE OF FIRST C.D.S. AS CANCELLATION ON COVER REGISTERED TO GERMANY; 9 June 1885 red-band env. (reduced at left, some creasing and part reverse lost but attractive) registered from Canton to Hamburg (redirected on arrival) with HK 10c (3) + 2c (5) making up the 40c rate and all tied by fine to very fine "A/CANTON" cds's (Webb Type B) with matching v. fine Canton "R" in circle alongside.
