Ascension: 1876, four covers from a correspondence addressed to William Samuel Holland “Ship’s Corporal, H.M.S. Flora” at Simons Bay, Cape of Good Hope, each sent from Devonport franked 1d., soiling and other faults. Between 1872 and 1889, the population of Ascension island was listed for official purposes as H.M.S. “Flora” (Tender) under the orders of the Commander-in-Chief, Cape of Good Hope. “Flora” had been the guardship at Ascension from 1865 to 1872 before being ordered south to become the guard ship at Simonstown.
