Booklets & Booklet Stamps
image Sale No: 246
Lot No:357
Symbol:B

c.1904 One Pound as ACSC B1 but in Purple on Pink with Bright Yellow Within, 'ISSUED BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE POSTMASTER-GENERAL/...' block imprint at L/L & Photograph of 'GENERAL POST OFFICE, PERTH' on the reverse, no stamps but with selvedge from a complete sheet of NSW 1d Arms still in place, the front cover with vertical crease at left from having been opened-out numerous times. Unlisted in the ACSC. A fantastic rarity! [Arthur Gray's similar example - Lot 11; misdescribed as "purple-brown" on pink - sold for a very modest £840] What we love about this item is that the printed ledger pages within have been neatly completed with enough detail for us to be confident the user was a firm of solicitors. We can't recall seeing another Pound Booklet in which all the usage details for all 240 stamps were entered. In addition, this is the first booklet we have handled with Perth GPO on the reverse: unlike the other GPO photographs, it is printed sideways. Also, the photo exhibits colour diffusion from bright magenta at left to dull purple at right, which was a feature of the so-called 'bicolour' scenic letter cards. [We note that the user has, in an idle moment of whimsy, lightly pencilled-in the State borders, further dating the booklet to before creation of the Northern Territory on 1.1.1911]

1915 2/- (Kangaroo ½d x12 + KGV Sideface 1d x18) with dark red/pink cover & red/pale green within ACSC B8 (SG SB2a) with Kangaroo ½d block of 6 & a single KGV 1d red remaining, a few minor blemishes, Cat $7500 (£4000). Rare dual issue booklet. Ex Martin Frischauf: sold for €1240. [In the 2003 edition of the ACSC 'Booklets', it was stated "...prices for pre-1928 booklets are for booklet covers containing any quantity of the relevant stamps...". However, in a classic voltre-face, the current 2020 edition states "...prices are for complete booklets with all stamp panes intact & original..." Just to confound matters further, the catalogue price in the two editions is the same!]

1927-28 2/3d (KGV SMult Wmk Perf 13½x12½ 1½d red x18) with 'COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA' at the Top & an unsevered block of 18 stamps ACSC B35 (SG SB20; wrongly noted as having three panes of 6), light spotting on the front cover otherwise unusually fine, Cat $2500 (£1400). [NB: the Gibbons booklet listings contain numerous errors. On the face of it, this could be SB20 or 23. The difference is that SB20 has a folded block of 18 and SB23 has three panes of 6, the first booklet to have this configuration. Note also that SB19 does not have the CofA Header & therefore 19a with CofA Omitted is an erroneous entry]

1927 Canberra so-called 'jumbo' booklet complete with ten marginal panes of 8 (2x4) stapled in the upper margins with no cover - as always - & backing paper of the same stock as the issued Canberra booklets, minor rust around the staple otherwise remarkably fine. Rare: only the third we have seen. 'Tillie Mitchell's complete booklet sold at our auction of 29.8.2020 for $1015. [Geoff Kellow at page 63 states "Several are recorded, most with some panes of stamps removed". Long considered a 'mystery' issue, perhaps of private manufacture, Kellow goes on to state that these booklets were prepared by the Post Office: a Post Office memorandum states "...these will be in strips of 8 fastened into lots of 80 to represent the number in the whole sheet". If the Post Office could call a Registration Envelope a 'Registered Letter', it could call a block a 'strip']
