1947, 2d Sheep Farming pictorial definitive essay, artist James Berry's preliminary pencil drawing with annotations, approximately 7.5" x 6.25", accompanied by submitted artwork in black ink and Chinese white on card approximately 10.5" x 8.5", together with stamp-size bromide of the design, typed notation affixed indicating that the design was to highlight the wealth obtained from the land, a beautiful group for an advanced collection of Australia, fine and rare.

While Berry created several designs for the competition for this issue, his submissions were ultimately rejected as he was not an Australian resident. His work can be found on the stamps of a number of countries, including New Zealand, Western Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, Tonga, and Bermuda. In 1948, Weekly Philatelic Gossip described him as "the greatest postage stamp designer in the world".

1848, Charles Whiting Arts Journal composite essay, four designs, the first being an embossed Queen Victoria cameo and PAID in rose oval, below two Royal Cypher designs bordered by fancy engine-turned background and the text "Principle Suggested / Beaufort House", at bottom an ornately-designed "VR" further bordered by intricate scrollwork, the four surrounded by detailed embossing, on reverse a green and red design with "PRINTED BY / CHARLES WHITING / BEAUFORT HOUSE / STRAND, LONDON / FOR PROTECTION AGAINST / FORGERY", approximately 8.5" x 11", from the 1848 Arts Journal, a few trivial marks at corners likely from prior mounting, not detracting from the piece's dramatic visual appeal.

Charles Whiting Charles Whiting was the well-known printer of Beaufort House in the Savoy, London and was an early and noted advocate for Rowland Hill’s campaign for postal reform. Whiting made several submissions to the Treasury Competition of 1839, using what was known as the Congreve Process, a complex method of interlocking plates that was an exceptional defence against forgery.

1842, Charles Dickens signed cover, franked with two 1d red, tied by black Maltese Cross, "1 Granville" and red "Too Late" handstamps struck on front, Stratford (Oct 21) and Great Malvern (Oct 25) backstamps, to Captain Granville, the original address in Dickens' hand crossed-out and re-addressed to Barnard's Green, Great Malvern, Worcestershire, with clear signature of Dickens at lower left, horizontal file fold through stamps and faults to back flap clear of postmarks and of no importance given the scarcity and visual appeal of this desirable cover.

The Letters of Charles Dickens, Volume 3, 1842-3, includes a letter from Dickens to Granville dated October 1842, in which Dickens expresses a number of colourful opinions, including about Canada, when he writes "Of course there is no place like old England. There never was, and never will be. What has a rational man to do with Canada? Nothing at all. Nobody who “calls himself a gentleman” - here I quote our Theatricals, which have come to be like a dream - has anything in common with such outlandish parts."
