1896 Zanzibar overprints on B.E.A, constant overprint varieties comprising 4½a broken "p" for "n", 4½a, 5a and 7½a (2, one within a pair) all with small second "z" and no dot over "i" (4½a, 7½a also with broken first "Z"), and 7½a with second gothic "z" and inverted "q" for "b", all mint, also 1a with broken first "Z" and no dot over "i" used. Scarce constant varieties all occurring once in each sheet, just 30 possible examples of the 1a, 5a and 7½a varieties and 41 examples of the 4½a varieties, several ex Minns collection. 1896 Zanzibar overprints on B.E.A, 4½a and 5a blocks of four, the 4½a block unmounted, the 5a block mounted with some gum loss to three stamps, the 4½a block with scarce variety first "Z" antique on upper right stamp, also antique "r" on the lower left stamp and small second "z" on the two left stamps. 1896 (June 2) Cover to "Lt. E. Charrington, H.M.S Philomel, Zanzibar" bearing B.E.A ½a, 1a and 2½a with Zanzibar overprints, each cancelled by Zanzibar c.d.s. The only three B.E.A overprint values to have been issued by this date, just the second day of issue of the 1a. Philatelic but still a scarce issue on cover, just 1,200 2½a stamps and 1,800 ½a and 1a stamps issued. H.M.S "Philomel" bombarded the Sultans Palace on August 27th in the Anglo-Zanzibar War, known as the shortest war in history. Photo on Page 244. (Image1)
