1896 (June 2) Cover to "Lt. E. Charrington, H.M.S Philomel, Zanzibar" bearing B.E.A ½a, 1a and 2½a with Zanzibar overprints, each cancelled by Zanzibar c.d.s. The only three B.E.A overprint values to have been issued by this date, just the second day of issue of the 1a. Philatelic but still a scarce issue on cover, just 1,200 2½a stamps and 1,800 ½a and 1a stamps issued. H.M.S "Philomel" bombarded the Sultans Palace on August 27th in the Anglo-Zanzibar War, known as the shortest war in history. Photo on Page 244. (Image1)

1897-99 Covers bearing 1896 issue stamps, comprising 2½a on cover to Gibraltar, 5a on cover to Tanga, cover to USA (with "English Club, Zanzibar" flap) franked by six ½a and two 1a stamps, and "Deutsche-Ostafrikanische Gesselschaft" printed cover registered to Germany franked ½a (2), 1a pair, 2a and 2½a, printed paper seal on reverse, four fine commercial datestamps. Also a philatelic registered cover to Germany bearing ½a - 3a. (5).

1897 Registered cover to Italy, redirected to Switzerland, franked 1896 1r cancelled by Zanzibar Reg. c.d.s, circular framed "R" and oval handstamp containing the registration number, backstamped at Aden, Genoa and Gerzensee. A scarce commercial use of the 1r value.

1897 2a Registration envelope, size J (H&G 2a) posted to France franked 1896 4a and 1r cancelled by Zanzibar Reg. datestamps, circular framed "R" handstamp and octagonal La Reunion A Marseille transit datestamp, arrival backstamp. A scarce commercial use of the 1r value on this large size registration envelope, a few very minor edge creases, otherwise unusually fine.
