PRE-STAMP COLLECTION WRITTEN UP ON LEAVES: The c.1781-1866 collection of pre-stamp and stampless covers, many from Wakefield area but also a variety of other Yorkshire locations. Includes examples of s/l and horseshoe town marks (Leeds, Tadcaster, York, Kirkgate, etc.). Several v.fine UDCs noted incl. Dewsbury, Pontefract, Retford, Haxey, Mirfield, Maltby, Dronfield, etc. Also 1848 EL with v. fine Skipsea UDC in blue - scarce thus. Also of interest 1833 EL to Shrops. with v. fine strike of boxed "Millbridge/Penny Post", 1842 EL from Bombay to Dewsbury with red "INDIA" in oval, 1843 EL ex Charleston, S.C. to Leeds with "AMERICA/L" in oval mark, etc. (c.46 covers) (Image)

SHEFFIELD: A box file containing a 1765-1906 collection of cards/covers presented chronologically on display leaves. Includes 25 Dec. 1765 EL to London with large s/l "SHEFFIELD" town mark alongside "28/DE" Bishop mark, similar "SHEFFIELD" mark on 1781 EL to Manchester, 1796 local EL with fine red "SHEFFIELD" 'horseshoe', 1807 EL to Rochdale with boxed "SHEFFIELD/163" mileage mark, 1827 wrapper with dated horseshoe mileage (163) mark and 1829 EH with same mark but mileage removed. Collection continues with representative examples of double arcs (large, small, serifed, unserifed, etc.) numeral cancels and extensive range of s/ways duplexes (various lettered/numerical codes), cds's and squared circles. YORK & DISTRICT: Two cartons with the accumulation of cards, covers, postmarks and other material relating to York & surrounding area, being the balance of a collection. The accumulation includes pre-stamp through to modern cards & covers incl. a binder with many dozens of 1d red & 1d lilac covers with numeral and duplex cancels. Also a qty. of early 20th C. PPCs and some modern railway commemorative covers. Amongst the more unusual items are a couple of woven silk 'Stevengraphs' depicting the London-York Mail Coach, one of these inscribed "Souvenir of the Franco-British Exhibition, 1908"; 5 Nov 1857 stampless env. (opened out) from York to Illinois charged "19/cents" with circular "[Br? ..]CKET/20/NOV/24/BOSTON" mark. Also in the lot, a wood & brass intaglio type hand stamp "NUN MONKTON/[crown]/YORK".
