PHILATELIC LITERATURE: "The Half-Lengths of Victoria" by JRW Purves (1952), 240pp hardbound with gilt-edged pages & cut-away section with a separate spiral-bound booklet of the plates inserted (as issued), the cover a little worn but the pages are very fine. Bill Purves' magnum opus, that should be in every serious philatelist's library, which would be some achievement as only 120 copies were printed, of which this is Number "78".

1850-53 Half-Lengths Thomas Ham Fourth State of the Die (Vertical Drapes) 2d cinnamon SG 17, margins just touched (at top) to large, ironed-out crease at lower-right that in no way affects the very fine appearance, unused, Cat £4000. RPSofV Certificate (2007). [At least as attractive as the example Ex Henry Harvey, Rod Perry and Ken Barelli that sold at auction in 2006 for $1840. It also appears at least the equal of any of Gary Diffen's 3 examples that sold for £2232, £1057 & £705 in 2007: the Diffen catalogue stated "...no fine unused examples are known & no multiples have been recorded. These are among the finest examples known"]

Cat No:81

1859 Perf 12 by Robinson 1/- Octagonal SG 81 block of 4 [Pos 38-39/5-6], the third unit with Colour Flaws below 'E' & on 'S' of 'ONE SHILLING', some perf separation & judicious reinforcing with hinges, the second unit with a small stain, large-part o.g., Cat £1600++. Ex Charles Lathrop Pack, Bernard Forster, Rod Perry, Geoff Kellow, Michael Silvasich and Joseph Hackmey. RPSofL Certificate (2006). In addition to being a very desirable multiple, this is a highly significant specialist piece. Geoff Kellow at pages 82-84 comments on the remarkable layout of the sheet of 100, being comprised of two blocks of 40 (8x5), a block of 16 (8x2) & a vertical strip of 4 added in the R/H margin! He also notes that during production an unknown number of substitutions were made, evidenced by both horizontal and vertical pairs with 'abnormal combinations'. This and one other block, both of which were identified after publication of the book in 1990, are the only recorded blocks & thus the largest known abnormal combination multiples.

Unlisted by Gibbons. Ex JRW Purves, Rodney Perry and Gary Diffen: sold for £840. RPSofL Certificate (1963). [A very fine example of this extraordinary error, caused by degrading of the 'make-ready' during printing & noted by Geoff Kellow at page 162 as being "constant until a new make-ready was prepared which, in view of its rarity, must have been quite quickly".
