POSTAL CARDS: 1889 QV 2d violet 'FOR THE UNITED KINGDOM/By the long sea route' postal card Steig # P11 to Messrs Winch Bros, Foreign Stamp Dealers with 'HAWTHORN/JA 3/89/VICTORIA - 48' duplex cancel being the First Day of Issue, lenghty message about exchanging stamps does not mention the significance of the FDI usage, minor edge fault at base. [These cards are extremely difficult to find properly used in-period. Victoria joined the UPU on 1.10.1891 from which time the UPU 1½d postcard rate applied, effectively making these cards obsolete. The vast majority were revalued with '1½d' overprint in red and issued as Steig #P14.
