1871 (5 Oct) Stampless Cover to BAIRNSDALE from 'BRUNECK' (Southern Tyrol) with Austrian type 'thimble' cds endorsed "Via Brindisi" with transit backstamps of 'TRIESTE/7/10/71', then sent west overland to France with 'LYON/11/OCT/71', 'LYON A MARSEILLE/11/10/71' backstamp, superb strike of the unusual septagonal Anglo-French Postal Convention 'FR./2f96c' postage payable handstamp, oval mss "2/6"/MORE TO PAY' handstamp, Melbourne transit & Bairnsdale arrival cds. Minor defects. [There is only one other inwards item recorded bearing any of the Anglo-French handstamps. Bruneck is a medieval town in the Southern Tyrol. Today it is the Italian town of Brunico, 80% of the population still speak German. The routing via France suggests that the cover was mis-directed from Trieste, adding as much as a week to the transit time.] (Image1)

1883-1910 16 page one frame exhibit from 'STAMPEX 17' as a study of Thomas Twyford comprising business covers, mourning covers and postcards within the date range plus various items of social history. The exhibit starts with an out of context imperf 1d red/blued paper on a mourning cover with an 1850 backstamp whereas this stamp wasn't issued until 1854 - this apparent conundrum is not addressed. The jury assessment is not included, and a two page exhibit synopsis is. In addition, a range of other exhibit paraphernalia from other exhibitions including certificates awarded and jury assessments. (Image1)
