Bundle of mostly 1880s covers with some postmark interest including 'DOOGALOOK' cds, TPO Down Trains MG11, MG 14 & MG 16 x2, etc, small album of Emblems, Beaded Ovals & Laureates on piece with a few Barred Numerals including very fine First Type '141' of Penshurst (rated RRRR); also NSW covers including early TPOs 'RP/NSW' & 'GNRP/NSW' cancels, etc; condition variable.
Post Office ephemera including a series of twenty clippings re takings at the GPO in January 1850 (Ex Purves) that prove that the Half-Lengths - available at the GPO from 1.1.1850 - were actually not sold until 3.1.1850; also three pieces signed "A McCrae" as Chief Postmaster of Victoria (1851-53) & as Postmaster-General (1854-1857), four Government Gazette extracts re postal matters & defective 1852 'REGISTERED LETTER' receipt.

1841-50 pre-stamp entires including 1845 Ship Letter to Melbourne with fair 'GEELONG/NEW S WALES' d/s, 1845-46 Overland Letters to Melbourne with 'ALBURY/NEW S WALES' oval d/s rated 11d, & to Sydney with 'MELBOURNE/PORT PHILLIP' oval d/s rated 1/5d, 1847 to London rated "7" in red amended to "8" in black, 1848 from London to "Melbourne, South Australia" rated 1/-, 1850 from London and India (large-part entire) with 'CALCUTTA/GPO/SHIP LETTER' boxed d/s in red both with 'GEELONG/PORT PHILLIP' crowned-oval arrivals, condition variable.

1847 outer endorsed "Paid & Registered" with very fine rounded-boxed 'THE GRANGE/POST PAID' h/s in red & watery 'THE GRANGE/PORT PHILLIP' b/s, rated "8" in red, poor Portland arrival b/s, two ironed-out vertical filing folds. A very early registered cover. Ex Bill Purves.
1854 small cover rated "6" in red with very fine boxed 'PAID AT/WANGARATTA' h/s unusually in black & fair oval 'WANGARATTA/VICTORIA' b/s, fine Melbourne arrival b/s.
1855 outer to GB "Per True Briton" with Woodblocks 6d pair (full margins but creased) tied by BN '10' of Warrnambool, largely fine 'SHIP LETTER/FREE/WARNAMBOOL VICTORIA' cds (note spelling) arrival b/s of DE9/1855 in blue, repaired opening tear; and part-entire from Sydney with Laureates 2d x3, to "Belfast/Port Fairy" with light but clear 'SHIP LETTER/FREE/ BELFAST VICTORIA' arrival b/s.

1856 (Feb 22) outer to Melbourne with Campbell & Fergusson 1d orange-brown SG 27 [2] & 3d deep blue SG 31c [10] both with margins just touched to large tied by light BN '2' cancels of Geelong (superb oval b/s). A beautiful classic cover. Ex Pack. RPSofV Certificate (2011). [Fewer than 20 covers are recorded with the 1d SG 27]
1859 cover to USA with Emblems Rouletted 4d SG 71b strip of 3 plus Perf 12 1d SG 76 pair tied by BN '5', oval 'BALLARAT/FE14/59/VICTORIA' b/s, Geelong & London transit cds of AP11/59 in red, rated "8"(d) = "16"(c) with superb American '5' postage due h/s (Palmer #US13), minor peripheral damage & light overall soiling. 1872 (Sep 30) cover to London "Via Marseilles" with scarce franking of '9 9/ NINEPENCE' on Laureates 10d brown/pink SG 171 tied by Melbourne duplex, London arrival cds of SP30/72 in red on the face, GB 1d added for redirection fee & tied by superb 'LONDON-W/ 6 /SP30/72 - W/31' duplex, 'DEAL' arrival b/s, minor soiling & part of the flap missing.
1876 (Nov 30) double-rate outer with superb 'HOGG, ROBINSON & CO/MELBOURNE' cachet at lower-left, to London "via Brindisi" with rare franking of '8d 8d/EIGHTPENCE' on Bell 9d horizontal pair tied by Melbourne duplex, London arrival cds of 13JA77 in red on the face, light ironed-out filing fold well clear of the stamps and markings. [Geoff Kellow at page 197 states "Covers are of considerable rarity"]
1897 Hospital Charity Fund QV Diamond Jubilee 1/- (1d) pair tied 'ST KILDA/OC25/97/VICTORIA-78' duplex cancels on local cover, couple of minor blemishes. Used three days after issue on 22.10.1897.

1910-11 three large (card table-size) sheets of paper printed with different combinations of table games including Snakes & Ladders and Ludo all folded to 255x190mm & endorsed "Printed Matter" posted locally at Melbourne with 1d pink single (2) or pair tied by Melbourne cds, some aging/soiling & some minor separation along the folds. Truly AMAZING! [Also included is an unrelated batch of receipts, illustrated letterheads etc]

1912 complete black/red 'VICTORIA/INTERSTATE/PARCEL POST' label with 2d and 6d tied by indistinct 'PP/MELBOURNE' cds, minor wrinkles. [The rate for an interstae parcel up to 1LB was 8d]
GOLDFIELDS EXPRESS COVERS: 1858 stampless OHMS cover (267x115mm) with 'Police Department' imprint at lower-left & endorsed "Ballarat/Nov 3 1858" below, rated "8/6" & endorsed "pr Escort" in the same hand at upper-left, to the Chief Commissioner of Police at Melbourne, no postal markings, two vertical folds. Ex Rod Moreton. Nothing to look at but very rare.
GOLDFIELDS EXPRESS COVERS: 1852 (Jan 6) return-half of an entire with defective 2d Half-Length & fine Melbourne b/s of JA*6/1853, light 'FORREST CK/JA*3/1853/VICTORIA' alongside indicates that this is the "reply-half" of a letter that originated at what was later Castlemaine (9km NNW of Fryers Creek). The writer states: "...On Monday next I shall send you a further sum by private escort and the letter containg the receipt will also be sent by the Escort...I enclose a printed form of the Private Escort Arrangements for the coming year and also send you a few stamps as all letters sent by the Escort must be stamped as if sent by post".
MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATIONS:1) "X" on Emblems 2d with tiny 'FITZROY/AU2/62/VICTORIA' b/s of Fitzroy (1), part South Yarra arrival b/s, flap damage; 2) "Big Hill/17 10 62" unusually as an arrival on reverse of cover from Melbourne with poor oval 'LOCKWOOD' transit d/s unusually on the face; 3) "PO Maidens Punt/20 2 52" on reverse of part-entire to GB with Half-Lengths 1d & 2d pair (all with clipped corners) cancelled in transit at Melbourne; and 4) "Tallarook/12 8 71" unusually on the face of cover with DLR 2d tied by recut BN '343'.

POSTAL STATIONERY- POSTAL CARDS - OFFICIAL: 1905 (circa) 1d with 'OS'-of-Dots in the Die for Board of Advice, local usage at Winchelsea with duplex of JE21/05. Rare. [There are at least four sub-types of the Board of Advice cards. This is Carl Stieg's #D5, of which he records only one usage, on 11.5.1905]
