"Interrogatories, and Answers, given by Mr. Lambert, resident of the Island of Tristan d'Acunha, December 22nd 1811" heading on a 203x330mm document (folded) with the questions and answers regarding life on the island filling each of the four "pages", among the questions (and answers) asked "At what time did you land? (January 6th 1811) ", "How many persons landed with you? (Two, both remaining)", "Did you find any animals or vegetables of service to you (Wild pigs...Wild goats...Wild celery)", "What is the nature of the soil? (Slight black vegetable, about 18 inches deep)", "What quantity of land can be cultivated with advantage? (About 300 acres...)", "What protection have you against the weather? (One Hut of Skins)", "What materials have you for building? (Stones at Hand)", etc. with the last being "Would negroes be of any service? 1932 Stampless Cover to South Africa, ladies envelope with bold strikes of "2d" and octagonal framed "T 20c" due markings, back side with South Africa 1d Dues damaged pair tied by partial 28 MY 32 town cancel, bit roughly opened with some backflap tears and a few small edge breaks at top, a bit of transfer from another document on the address side, a Fine use; 2004 Sismondo certificaternThe envelope was carried on the M.V. King William which departed Tristan on Feb 14, 1932. The enclosed letter from Frances Repetto is datelined at Tristan the same day. In it she mentions that a ship has not stopped by the island for 10 months, the bishop of St Helena visit, and other bits concerning life on the island. There was a period in 1932 when there was no cachet available as it had been taken by Rev Partridge on a 5-month leave of absence from Jan-May 1932.rn (Image)

1961 Evacuation Mail, envelope addressed to England (and forwarded), GB 3d Elizabeth II tied by "Post Office Maritime Mail" naval cancel, backstamped Liphook 23 Oct 61 and with return address of Mrs Mary Swain, red "Commanding Officer/ H.M.S. Leopard/ 15 Oct 1961" commanding officer's cachet, slightly rough opening at top, Fine and rarernWhen news of the volcanic eruption on Tristan went out, HMS Leopard was despatched from Cape Town and reached the island on Oct 13. Shore parties from the ship performed clean-up duties on the island, secured islanders' houses and brought away any portable items belonging to the residents. In addition, a total of four letters written and waiting to be posted were found. These had stamps added on board the ship and were stamped with the Commanding Officer's cachet. (Image)

1963 Visit of "USS Spiegel Grove", #55-58, 61, 63, tied on registered envelope addressed to Cape Town by "Tristan Da Cunha 2 May 63" cds, ship's rubber stamp return address upper left, accompanied by another "Spiegel Grove" cover to USA with #63 tied by "Tristan Da Cunha 2 May 63" cds and a 4-line "Missent to Trinidad B.W.I." (creases at top affect stamp), F-VF; a helicopter was used to transport mail from the shiprnUSS Spiegel Grove (LSD-32) was a Thomaston-class dock landing ship of the US Navy, named for Spiegel Grove, the home and estate in Fremont, Ohio of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President. The LSD loaded supplies during January 1963 and sailed, on 15 February for her second good-will tour which lasted until late May. The ship steamed over 21,000 miles and visited nine countries, Tristan among them, before returning home. (Image)
