Cat No:4
1853 Couriers Thin Hard White Paper 1d blue as SG 4 but an unlisted Intermediate State with Very Little Evidence of Wear [Pos 23], an enormous example with margins good to huge with full outer framelines & a chunk of the adjoining unit at right, an insignificant natural paper thin - a characteristic of this thin paper - at L/L, untidy BN '59' cancel, Cat £1300. Superb!
1853 Couriers Plate II with Coarse Engraving 4d dull orange SG 11, margins good to large, very fine BN '64' of Hobart & small-part London cds in red at L/L, Cat £375.
1856-57 No Watermark 4d blue SG 22 block of 6 (3x2), margins good to huge with fragments of two adjoining units at the base, some characteristic burnishing marks in the margins & a small piercing in the margin only at L/L, manuscript "58"-in-Cross-Hatching applied separately to all six units at Waterloo Point, Cat £840++ for singles. A rare & stunning multiple. Ex John White & Koichi Sato: sold in 2014 for €1320.
1857-67 Watermark Double-Lined Numerals 4d pale blue as SG 36 but with the Watermark Inverted block of 4, margins close to good except at L/L where just touched & with a fragment of the adjoining unit at U/L, untidy but legible BN '58' of Waterloo Point (or Melton Mowbray ?), Cat £100++ for normal singles. A rare multiple, especially of this quality. Stated to be Ex John Boker but not included in his auction of 14.4.1981.
1863-71 Experimental Separations Perf 12 by Walch & Sons under Contract to the Post Office 1d dull carmine SG 70 block of 12 (6x2), perfs trimmed at right & at the foot of the L/L unit, virtually full brown o.g. with some characteristic natural gum blemishes, the lower units being unmounted, Cat £1560++ for unused singles. Ex Joseph Hackmey. RPSofL Certificate (2006) states "gum toned", with which assessment we do not agree. [NB: the illusion of short or trimmed perfs at the top of the second & third units is caused by the presence of a minor hinge remnant]
1863-71 Experimental Separations Perf 12 by Walch & Sons under Contract to the Post Office 1d carmine with Error of Watermark '2' SG 70a, bars cancel of Hobart, Cat £2750. An underrated rarity. Ex Collins, Julian Beresfard, 'Isleham', Cohen and Joseph Hackmey. Clear RPSofV Certificate (1998) and RPSofL Certificate (2008) that states "perfs at top improved". [Gary Diffen had only two pen-cancelled stamps. About 30 examples are recorded, most with manuscript fiscal cancellations and/or faked cancellations. Only four stamps have been authenticated as genuine postally used examples]
