VERY FIRST 2d 'POSTAGE STAMP' - SILK-THREADS DICKINSON/WHITING "LONDON DISTRICT POST" ESSAY; July 1837 2d Green "V[Crown]R/LONDON/DISTRICT POST" "POST OFFICE COVER" letter-sheet Essay (wear to original folds as usual, some slight scuffs to plain flap); this was produced by Charles Whiting on John Dickinson's silk-threads paper (the threads are only present across the address-panel) and was included only in the 7th July 1837 Parliamentary 9th Report from the "Commission to Inquire into the Management of the Post Office"; the similar 1d Essays were included in the same Report in both envelope and letter-sheet formats and were also included in some of Hill's pamphlets, so they are much commoner than this 2d Essay. Important "First Essay" for any QV or Mulreadys collection.Cross Reference: LONDON POSTAL HISTORY (Image)
