1833 letter re William Hopwood of Guildford having been given permission to visit Sydney, signed by the Principal Superintendent (of Convicts?), very fine; 1853 Affidavit of parties wishing to marry, rather soiled; and 1874 OPSO cover with very fine '[crown]/FREE/23JY23/1874' cds of Hobart, 'RICHMOND' arrival b/s, minor blemishes.

1855 entire headed "Empression Bay 1855/November 25" & signed "Ed BA Hardy/Westmoreland", to Lancashire endorsed "Convict Letter" & at U/L "Exd/AJV/I Kerr" (= Examined), GPO cds & '[crown]/FREE' cds of the same date, 'AUSTRALIAN/LIVERPOOL/26MR/56/=PACKET=' transit & 'KENDALL' arrival b/s, minor defects. Ex Michael Blake.
Impression Bay Probation Station was located on the northern shore of the Tasman Peninsula, on the site of Premaydena. Edward Hardy had the dubious distinction of having been transported three times!, firstly to Bermuda in 1833; then to VDL in 1841 for seven years; finally again to VDL in 1849 for life. This is extraordinary because it was a term of a convict's parole that he was not to return to England. The reference to "Westmoreland" is to the ship on which he arrived in 1841. He states "...I have been in a great deal of trobele through drink...[I] will put myself to better may please god..."
1868 cover to London with scarce Two-Issue franking of Imperf 4d blue SG 37 (margins close to large with a chunk of the adjoining unit at right) & Perf 10 2d yellow-green SG 60 (Cat £150 x10+ on cover) with neat bars cancel & 34mm GPO cds of 23AP23/1868 in red at left, London arrival cds of JU19/68, minor faults.
1887 cover to England with Sideface 1d red strip of 6, 2d green and 4d yellow all tied Barred Numeral '63' with 'NEW NORFOLK/JY27/87/TASMANIA' cds alongside paying 6d per ½oz ship letter rate x2, Hobart b/s, couple of minor marks. Apparently originally franked with the 1d strip and found to be over ½oz as the other two values have been affixed over a small part of the address, making a lovely three-colour franking.
