A very early use of this stamp issued less than a month prior to this use, and an exceptionally rare usage of the stamp on cover which is probably unique. India 1866 QV 2a purple fiscal stamps overprinted "SERVICE/POSTAGE" in green, with intact "FOREIGN/BILL" inscription, generally good colour and very lightly cancelled; some faults/defects though the UNIQUE example of this stamp and the basis of the SG catalogue listing. Marked "Ex Burrus" on reverse. SG O16a £30,000. 2008 RPSL certificate Notes: The 1866 Provisionals were issued due to the Post Office Act XIV on 1 May 1866. This was made in an attempt to curb abuse by Government Officials in using stamps for personal use and lead to proper accounting of mail sent through Official channels. These impoverished provisionals were made by taking Foreign Bill Revenues, cutting off "Foreign" and "Bill" portions of the design and overprinting them for Official use $30,000-35,000 (Image)

India QV ½a mauve on lilac fiscal stamp overprinted "SERVICE/POSTAGE" in semi-circle in green, block of eleven from the 1st. Setting, 3-4, 15-17, 27-29, 39-41, each cancelled with type 6 cancel with four sharing unclear G.P.O. circular datestamp and tied to piece; two stamps with minor faults, otherwise sound. Believed to be the largest recorded block and a spectacular showpiece multiple. SG O19 £1760 as singles Note: It was soon found that the supply of "Service" stamps would not be sufficient to cope with the demand and it was not considered advisable to overprint any more of the current postage stamps as these stocks were also becoming very low. Between 4 August and 7 September 1866 sheets of the ½a. "Bill or Draft" stamps were surcharged "SERVICE/POSTAGE". There were two different settings of the overprint, the first being in one horizontal row of twelve, repeated down the sheet Provenance: Sir Eric Studd, 1976 $4,000-5,000 (Image)
