1876-1900 Broad Star Perf 11½-12½ '8 PENCE' on 9d dull pale brown vertical pair Imperforate Between SG 120a, characteristic rough perfs, a couple of minor bends, large-part o.g., Cat £9500. Unique! Ex Gary Diffen: sold for £5400. RPSofV Certificate (2001). [It was stated in the Diffen catalogue "...it is interesting to note that this is the only major error not to feature in any of the great collections of South Australia". This pair was discovered in 1916 & listed by Gibbons from 1917. It is truly remarkable that no other example has been located in more than 100 years]

1876-1900 Broad Star Irregular Compound Perf 10 & 11½-12½ 2/- carmine P10x11½x11½x11½ horizontal pair Imperf Between SG 145a, light ironed-out vertical fold probably to aid separation, untidy GPO dupex cancels, Cat £6500. Ex Rev James Mursell (1964), and Gary Diffen: sold for £3600. [Gary Diffen identified four examples, one of which is in the Royal Collection, and one of which has not been seen since it was last sold in 1943. NB: Gibbons list the error as in the 'rose-carmine' shade, which is clearly a mistake, that was repeated in the Diffen catalogue]
1868 De La Rue 2d imperforate colour trial/plate proof blocks of 4 on ungummed Crown/SA paper in reddish pink, claret, brown-red, orange-yellow, orange (close to the issued colour), blue-green & deep blue, full margins close in a few places, very fine & colourful.
(Qty 7 blocks)
1876-1904 De La Rue Narrow Crown/SA Perf 10 1d green with Double Print SG 167bb, quite well centred for this issue, tonespot that shows through to the face, undercatalogued at £400. BPA Certificate (1993) as the then SG 169var, plus a letter from the editor of the Gibbons catalogues confirming that this stamp would be listed from the 1994 edition. [Far more attractive than the only other recorded example, which is poorly centred]
1886-1912 Long Types with 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' Perf 10 unused 15/- & used 2/6d & 10/-, Perf 11½-12½ unused 2/6d 10/- & £1, mint 5/-, used 2/6d to 10/- plus fake cancels on £2 £5 silver & £5 brown, Thin 'POSTAGE' mint set, Thick 'POSTAGE' mint set plus a few extra shades to 10/- & used to 10/-, 1906-12 Crown/A mint to 5/- plus shades to 2/6d & used to 2/6d x2, generally of very fine appearance but there are some gum-side issues, Cat £5000+ (not including the fakes).

1886-96 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' Perf 10 £3 sage-green SG 202, indistinct 'REGISTERED/...' squared-circle, Cat £800+ for CTO. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2015). [Gibbons' "used" prices are for CTO stamps from presentation sets. Postally used examples of the higher values are much scarcer. A very fine postally used £3 sold at our auction of 25-26.2.2016 for $1426]
1886-96 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' Perf 11½-12½ £20 claret SG 208a, characteristic irregular perfs & a couple of pulled perfs at the top, CTO with the Melbourne cds with no inscription at the base, Cat £2750 for CTO (no genuine postally used examples exist).
1892 (c.) 5d stamp-size original hand-painted artwork in India ink & Chinese white on thin card (31x36mm) endorsed "Finis Coronat Opus" at the base. A beautiful & superb essay. ['Finis Coronat Opus' {= "the end crowns the work"} was the nom-de-plume of Melbourne artist Maximilian Tannenberg who worked for the printers Troedel & Co. Another of his designs was adopted for the issued stamp. Similar 2½d & 5d designs sold at our auction of 30.8.2020 & 25.3.2021 for $3833 & $4073 respectively]
1902-04 Long Toms Thin 'POSTAGE' 4d red-orange with 'POSTAGE' & Value Misplaced Downwards ACSC S20c (SG 269 variety), a little soiled, Adelaide cds, Cat $3000. Sold at our auction of 14.4.2005 for $1380. [JRW Purves recorded two used examples] The illustration is above Lot 498.
1906-12 Thick 'POSTAGE' Crown/A Watermark 9d brown-lake marginal vertical pair from the base of the sheet Imperforate Between & at Base ACSC S52b (SG 302a), the upper unit with a horizontal crease through the words of value, hinge remainders, Cat $2000 (£2500).
The ACSC notes that there are two versions of this error, from an upper pane with a row of perforations below the base between the panes, and from a lower pane showing the marginal line at base; this example is from the lower pane, of which the ACSC states "A block and a pair have been recorded". The ACSC catalogue price is from the 'Kangaroos & The Early Federal Period' edition (2004); the Gibbons price at that time was £550. Sold at our auction of 19.5.2005 for $1380. Gary Diffen's example - from the upper pane - sold for £1560. The illustration is above Lot 500.
