South Africa: South African War 1899-1902, A remarkable group of Great Britain stamps used in Pretoria during the ‘privilege’ period, comprising 1/2d. vermilion (3), 1/2d. blue-green (6), 1d. (2), 11/2d., 2d., 21/2d. (2), 4d., 5d., 6d., 10d. (2), 2s.6d., 5s., 10s. and £1, all on pieces cancelled by Pretoria/Transvaal or Pretoria/1 c.d.s’s dated between Feb. 16 and Nov. 14, some also showing triangular Passed Press Censor cachet. Accompanying account records the reminiscence of Col. Kenneth Dingwall of the Gordon Highlands that the 1/2d. blue-green and 10d. were not available in Pretoria and that these values must have travelled from England in soldiers’ pocket books.
