South Africa: South African War 1899-1902, A remarkable group of Great Britain stamps used in Pretoria during the ‘privilege’ period, comprising 1/2d. vermilion (3), 1/2d. blue-green (6), 1d. (2), 11/2d., 2d., 21/2d. (2), 4d., 5d., 6d., 10d. (2), 2s.6d., 5s., 10s. and £1, all on pieces cancelled by Pretoria/Transvaal or Pretoria/1 c.d.s’s dated between Feb. 16 and Nov. 14, some also showing triangular Passed Press Censor cachet. Accompanying account records the reminiscence of Col. Kenneth Dingwall of the Gordon Highlands that the 1/2d. blue-green and 10d. were not available in Pretoria and that these values must have travelled from England in soldiers’ pocket books. Between Feb. and Nov. 1901 troops from each country or colony were permitted to use their own issues in the civil post offices of the Transvaal. Photo. Import VAT 5% (Image1)
