South Africa: Mafeking Siege Issues: 1900 (Apr.) narrow format 3d. deep blue on piece tied to piece by “AP 23/1900” c.d.s., accompanied by rare autograph note written by Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941) explaining the issue, dated “Nov 1937” and signed “Baden-Powell”. “This stamp was used for local postage within Mafeking during the siege, the “postmen” boys of the place formed into a corps for the duty. they showed by their conduct that boys can be trusted and this encouraged me to rely on them to keep their promise when later we formed the Boy Scouts.” First sold by auction in 1937 for the benefit of North Wiltshire Scouts, with corroborating letter and invoice from purchaser.
