Rott 13 Apr backstamps, Fine usernDundee was one of the offices to use the old British cancelling device during the occupation. rnThe British started massing troops at Dundee and were given an ultimatum by the Boers to retreat. On 20 October 1899, the first shots of the Second Boer War were fired. After the battle, the British troops retreated to Ladysmith and Boer forces occupied Dundee for seven months, renaming it Meyersdorp. Dundee was relieved after the battle of Helpmekaar in May 1900. ELANDSLAAGTE 20 FEB. 1900 two strikes of oval cancel on Transvaal 1d postal card addressed to 'sGravenhage, transit and arrival cancels on face along with boxed "E. 17", message in Dutch and datelined (translated) "Besieging Troops around Ladysmith 17.2.1900", a little bit of postal wear with very light bends top corners, Fine.rnNote the difference in the Elandslaagte cancel from the previous lot - it appears the bottom portion of the cancel was removed to eliminate the "Z.A.R.". rnElandslaagte (about 15 miles from Ladysmith) was the scene of the Battle of Elandslaagte, one of the first battles of the Second Anglo-Boer War, on 21 October 1899. The siege around Ladysmith ended 10 days after this card was written. (Image)
