Saint Helena: 1881 (Mar. 20) envelope to whaling captain Gilbert L. Smith at Vineyard Haven, Massachuetts franked at 2s.3d. double Foreign rate by 1876 1d., 2d., 1s. (2) with 'sunburst of eight wedges' type 04.06 dumb cancellations, despatch c.d.s., London and New York Paid transit marks and noted "1/3" for British share. Ex Groten, Montrose, Lampart and Heijtz. Photo. The general foreign rate was reduced to 1s.11/2d. per 1/2oz. but due to the absence of 1/2d. stamps, unavailable until 1884, the single rate was rounded to 1s.2d. whereas the double rate could be charged correctly at 2s.3d. This the only known example of the 2s.3d. rate. (Image1)

Saint Helena: 1866 (Aug. 27) packet letter envelope to Pennsylvania, U.S.A. at rare 1s.8d. rate paid franked by type A 1864 4d. carmine pair and 1s. deep yellow-green with "H" type 02.01 dumb cancellations, oval datestamp in blue and noted "9" in ms. for postage share, carried on the "Celt" with London Paid Sept. 22 transit and to New York on the "City of New York II" with New York Pkt. Oct. 5 receiving mark and red "16/CENTS" added. Large sender's endorsement on reverse "U.S. Steamer "Juniata"/St. Helena Aug. 27th 1'66". The sloop of war "Juniata" was transferred to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron in Jan. 1865 and received orders to cruise as far south as Buenos Aires in protection of the interests of American citizens. She remained in South American waters until heading home to Philadelphia in Apr. 1867 with the exception of this cruise from June to Sept. 1866 which took her to the coast of Africa. The 1s.8d. rate was applicable to mail that was not endorsed by the sender by which method they wished their letter to go -- i.e. 'Ship Letter' or 'Packet Letter'. Photo. (Image1)

Saint Helena: "SOLOMON, MOSS, GIDEON & Co./St. HELENA" type CC.2 forwarding agents' cachet, the unique example on 1876 (Apr. 21) envelope franked 1s. at 1/2oz. packet rate, with rectangle of blocks dumb cancellation and despatch c.d.s., carried on the "Nyanza" with Swaffham May 10 arrival backstamp, light vertical folds. In 1814 Saul Solomon's brother Joseph had married Hannah Moss, daughter of boot and shoemaker Isaac Moss and after Saul's brother Lewis Gideon adopted an abbreviation the new company name was adopted. Saint Helena: First type "T" (T.1) tax marking on 1886 incoming cover most unusually from Uruguay and addressed to Naval doctor S.H. Griffiths on the U.S. flagship "Lancaster" sent underpaid from Montevideo Apr. 23 and missent to New York with May 28 transit backstamp and returned for re-despatch on the "Tartar" on June 2, finally receiving July 2 arrival c.d.s. The 10c. (1d.) stamp only affixed led to a consequent charge of 1s.1d., being double the 61/2d. underpayment. Very few examples of this mark are recorded between 1878 and 1886. Ex Groten and Heijtz.
