Saint Helena: 1920 (May 11) envelope franked "WAR TAX/1d." on 1d., addressed to "Captain J.P. Ault/Ship "Carnegie"/c/o Consul General U.S.A./Capetown/South Africa" with interesting enclosed letter from Major F.J. Brill, backstamped consul's framed receiving datestamp of May 19 in blue-green. Captain James Percy Ault (1881-1929) had first joined the crew of the non-magnetic brigantine "Carnegie" in 1909 and in 1914 had appointed captain. The "Carnegie" visited Saint Helena from Mar. 27-Apr. 3 whilst on her sixth expedition cruise of scientific discovery before laying up from 1921 to 1927 for extensive refurbishment. In Nov. 1929, whilst on her seventh cruise the "Carnegie" put into the port of Apia, Samoa and whilst refuelling an explosion occurred which mortally wounded Captain Ault and destroyed the vessel. Saint Helena: 1936 (Dec. 6) envelope (with R.N.E. St. Helena crest on flap) sent by Lt. Stone from the Marine Regt. to his mother in Southsea, Hampshire, franked by 1922-37 1/2d. and 8d. paying correct rate of 2d. letter rate + 61/2d. airmail fee, with blue bilingual "BY AIR MAIL" label, very rare with only a handful of surviving examples recorded.
