1882-95 Large Chalons High Values 2/- vermilion Imperforate Colour Trial on Unwatermarked Paper with manuscript "X" on face and endorsed on reverse "Approved for/colour 2/6d/Queensland", margins close to large at left. Superb. Ex Ed Williams. The 2/- value was issued in bright blue on 14.4.1882; the 2/6d vermillion was issued on 12.7.1882. See the illustration above Lot 834.

1882 Large Chalons High Values "set" of 2/- x4 - one with the rarely seen '...WILKINSON & CO BANK NOTE ENGRAVER...' imprint below) & 2/6d Imperf Plate Proof singles in the approved colours for the five values, a few small separation faults. Rare. [The inclusion of the 2/6d in green is consistent with Basset Hull's statement at page 158 that this was the only colour in which the 2/6d was printed, and that there was no 2/- in this colour. Bernie Manning's similar very fine set - none with the imprint - sold for $4194. NB: the proofs were printed in Brisbane; the imprint was burnished-off the plates before the stamps were printed] (5)

1882-95 Second Sidefaces Comb Perf 12½,13 1d vermilion New Plates as SG 179 or 187 but Rouletted about 6 with the rouletting clear of the design on all sides, neat 'GUNALDA/AU20/94/=QUE[ENSLAND]=' cds. Unlisted in Gibbons and not mentioned by Ken Scudder. Offered 'as is'. [The stamp is certainly large enough that, if it had been perforated, there would almost certainly be evidence of perforations. It may have come from imperforate stock SG 187a but, again, there is no record of the imperf stamps having been used at Gunalda]

1895-96 Second Sidefaces White Background Small Crown/Q (W6) Watermark Perf 12½,13 ½d deep green as SG 209 but Printed Double, a few faults, indistinct (parcel?) cancel. The doubling is most evident along the back of the Queen's head with a clear second impression 1mm to the right. Ex Gary Diffen. This variety was known to collectors in the 1920s, and there is an example in the Sir William Dixon Collection donated to the New South Wales State Library. Gibbons list the ½d green Printed Double as SG 208a, Cat £2000, but do not list the deep green shade with this variety. RPSV Certificate (2005) as SG 208a.

1897-1908 Sidefaces Figures in Four Corners ½d Die Proof in blue-green on Thin Wove Paper with Papermaker's Watermark '...D STA...', similar to the approved design but with the figures in the four corners at a 45 degree angle, endorsed in pencil "Not appd 1898", small piece of adhesive tape at the top from where the proof was attached to the printer's record book. Ex Colonel Harrie Evans: sold for $4300.
