1897-1908 Four Corners 1d red as SG 233b but Perf 12x9½ marginal block of 4 from the left of the sheet as ACSC Q9 (SG 233var) but Imperf at Left, characteristic rough perfs, the L/L unit with a significant tonespot, unused, Cat $1200+ for four fully perforated singles. Ex Gary Diffen: sold for £440. [The ACSC states "probably 50-60 examples [of the normal stamp] are known". It doesn't record the error, which is surprising since the block is referred to in a footnote for the two tiny holes in the margin "suggesting inclusion in a stamp booklet". We doubt that is the case: the holes are too close together, too close to the edge of the margin & too small]

Cat No:234a

1897-1908 Four Corners 2d blue Major Cracked Electro across Face & Neck as ACSC Q16dv (SG 234a) [Pos 45] but Retouched, a couple of short perfs at U/R, cancelled well clear of the affected area. Unlisted in the ACSC. With the 'normal' Cracked Electro for comparison. Far superior to the only other recorded example, that had several short perfs, a rounded corner, and the cancel intruding on the retouch: ex Bernie Manning, sold at our auction of 13.6.2009 for $1165. [The Cracked Electro presents as a Jagged White Flaw from the Brow to the Base of the Neck. The variety offered here appears to be a crude retouch involving a simple filling of the crack so that it now presents as a Colour Flaw. Geoff Kellow was apparently unaware of the retouch as he writes of the affected unit being substituted, without mentioning this "intermediate state". Ken Scudder at page 266 states "...an example is known where the crack has printed filled with ink"] (Qty 2)

Ex Bernie Manning: sold at our auction of 5.12.2009 for $1630. [The ACSC at page 1/57 states "This was originally a machine for perforating lettercards, which was converted to a vertical comb in mid-1911. The gauge of the vertical line was variable, the stamps of the first row measuring 11½, the second row 11, the third row 12 & the fourth to twelfth rows 12½-12¾.
