- TPO 11 - UP: manuscript "TPO No 11" in indelible pencil across 1d pink x5 on Tatts cover to Hobart, deplorable cancels that may include an 'R'-in-Circle h/s, Melbourne transit b/s. Rated RRRRR: the only TPO cover recorded with a manuscript cancellation. Ex Roy Holland: sold for £252. [Roy Holland believed this marking was applied on the train, & this was echoed in the London catalogue. However, it is in a very distinctive hand, matching many other non-TPO examples we have seen, & was almost certainly applied at the GPO, where it was the practice to identify the origin of registered mail that was not clearly cancelled] The illustration is above Lot 899.

TPOs 20 & 21: Manuscript cancellations in indelible pencil comprising "TPO/Down/[part-date]", "D Train/21.8.94" & "Up Train/20.4.94" each on Stamp Duty 2d violet. Ex JRW Purves and Roy Holland: sold for £180.

The Melbourne-Port Albert Line was completed by January 1892 but Molnar & Waugh at page 147 state TPO services didn't commence until 1898. However, by mid-1894 de facto TPO 20 & 21 services were operating, using mss markings. Les Molnar states #20 & 21 were shelved because of belt-tightening during the catastrophic Depression of the mid-1890s.
