1867 long cover (damaged) to John C Clendon in central London, GB, franked block of 4 x 6d FFQ red-brown, p12½ (ie: quadruple rate), each canc messy (very worn) barred oval obliterator (must be "3" ex Perkins Bacon 1855 series). Readdressed across London, irregular block of 5 GB 1d red, pl 78 added & canc "W3" obliterator. On back, large florid ink m/s "Hokianga Dec 4th 1867", light unframed "RUSSELL / NEW-ZEALAND" cds DE 6 1867, patchy Auckland framed cds DE 10? (peculiar date setup) & 2 diff London cds 2, 4 MR 68. This is the only Hokianga postal m/s marking recorded. This PO opened very early in 1840, with a "Crown in Oval" d/s, known used to 10 July 1865 & withdrawn by 1867. A new A-type cds is known from MR 12 70 (no pre-issue proof date is recorded), hence use of m/s in interim. Used blocks of 4 FFQs on cover are most unusual. The reason for the 5d redirection fee (over such a short distance) was necessary at this time, possibly was so high due to the weight of the item. A unique & unusual item. ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL DATA: John Chitty Clendon was the brother of James Reddy Clendon, the de facto 1st United States consul in NZ (from 1838) & an important figure in early NZ history. The brothers had been in partnership as ship owners in London. JR arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1830 & for several years ran a very successful business acting for visiting US ships. He developed close links with local Maori. But the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi dealt a severe blow to his US-linked business. He sold his land at Okiato to the new NZ Government and it became the town of Russell. For years he was involved in local politics. He became a police magistrate. In 1862 he moved to Hokianga (later renamed Rawene) as magistrate in the Native Circuit Court (from which he retired in 1867). This cover was very probably sent by him. [Data ex "The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography" (1990]. (Image)
