1940 Middle East Forces using Palestine Stamps mostly airmail to Australia with a wide variety of frankings, censor markings and Australian Field PO cancels including '.../B.W.1', '.../S.M.1', '.../D.W.1', 'S.P.1', '.../P.1'and '.../P.3' plus British 'FIELD POST OFFICE/121' & '.../123' cds, a number on Honour Envelopes, some sent through civilian POs including 'JERUSALEM' cds on 20m x6 with 'RAILHEAD P.O./R.M.1' cds alongside used on 'TPO' which travelled between the camps, 'SARAFAND' cds on 5m pair & 10m x5 with violet 'Insufficiently prepaid/for Air mail' cachet, two with 20m x9 paying triple rate (one with 'Insufficiently prepaid ...' cachet crossed out), a few with unit cachets '2/2/Bn AIF', '2/3rd Battalion' or '2/4th Battalion', plus YMCA envelope sent surface mail with 15m single tied 'HAIFA' and red 'PC 22' censor label tied 'PALESTINE/OPENED AND/PASSED BY/CENSOR/No. N18' cachet, one with 10m single from 'SARAFAND' with Sydney 'T /("1½")/5A' tax cachet, and part-parcel wrapper with 6m & 15m x2 tied dumb cancels, condition variable but mostly fine. 1941 OAS airmail cover endorsed from "LJ Golding A/B" with fine red boxed 'PASSED BY CENSOR/[initialled]/ DATE: ("26.6.41")' h/s on the face, to NSW with Sydney civil censor label & cachet at left, minor blemishes; plus 1940 cover to same addressee with italicised 'On Active Service' h/s in red and 'VICTORIA/19MY/40/HONG KONG' cds alongside with same 'PASSED ...' cachet on reverse, minor faults. [A similar 1940 item from the same correspondence sold for HK$2990 in June 2018. See also Lot 602636] (2)

Able Seaman Leslie John Golding was with the Royal Australian Navy. He served aboard the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMAS 'Kanimbla' which, in April 1940, commandeered one Danish & ten Norwegian ships at the mouth of the Yangtse River and escorted them to Hong Kong. In January 1942 he was transferred to HMAS 'Perth' which was sunk in the Battle of Sunda Strait on 1.3.1942 and he was amongst the 307 survivors who were taken Prisoner of War.

1942-43 Hand-Illustrated covers many from Middle East & New Guinea forces, Navy servicemen or from other overseas postings, wide variety of frankings, postmarks, censor cachets & subjects including jungle scenes, palm trees, two-up game, Pyramids, old-town street, fighter planes, etc, illustrations range from the amateur to the artistic, plus Clarrie King 'I've been putting on weight lately', condition quite variable but most are presentable.
