1914 'Bravo "Sydney" the end of the Emden' real photo (J Allcot) hand-tinted card showing the HMAS Sydney firing upon and receiving return fire from the SMS Emden - whose aft-decks are alight - with a Cocos Islands atoll in background, used under cover, fine condition. [The 'Battle of Cocos' took place on 9.10.1914, with the HMAS Sydney responding to the German light cruiser's attack on the wireless and cable transmission station on Direction Island. The heavily-damaged Emden was beached on North Keeling Island, and most of the crew were sent to prisoner-of-war camps in Australia. The photographer must have been watching the battle from the Islands; an intriguing possibility is that 'J Allcot' may be the famous shipping artist John Charles Allcot who was working on Australian merchant ships at the time before settling down in Sydney in 1915]
Golliwog cards by various artists & producers including a lovely design by Florence K Upton and a fold-out novelty type, some postal history interest. [Innocent for the time, but inherently racist]
